Here's assorted declassified CIA documents, definitely worth reading if you're
curious about political analysis of SA, as done by an overseas intelligence
gathering agency.

You'll notice 'blacked out' area's - these are 'redacted' or censored still-sensitive pieces of information that the CIA has decided we shouldn't read - even though the documents themselves are declassified.

(21 pages) From 1988 'The ANC - Weathering The Challenges' (and note the censoring)
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000659194&title=SOUTH+AFRICA'S+AFRICAN+NATIONAL+CONGRESS:+WEATHERING+CHALLENGES&abstract=&no_pages=0026&pub_date=3/1/1988&release_date=10/9/2001&keywords=SOVIET+UNION|USSR|SOUTH+AFRICA|AFRICAN+NATIONAL+CONGRESS|ANC|BOTHA|MANDELA+NELSON&case_no=F-1994-00592&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

From 1986 (and note the censoring) 'What If Mandela Were Free in SA':
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000659139&title=NELSON+MANDELA:+WHAT+IF+ALIVE+AND+WELL+AND+FREE+IN+SOUTH+AFRICA?&abstract=&no_pages=0009&pub_date=9/26/1986&release_date=10/9/2001&keywords=SOUTH+AFRICA|PRISON+RELEASE|SOCIALIST|MANDELA+NELSON&case_no=F-1994-00592&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

Created in 1990, titled 'Andries Truernicht - SA brokers of ballots and bullets' http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000417148&title=SOUTH+AFRICA'S+BROKERS+OF+BALLOTS+AND+BULLETS,+ANDRIES+TREURNICHT,+CONSERVATIVE&abstract=&no_pages=0003&pub_date=4/23/1990&release_date=8/22/2000&keywords=SOUTH+AFRICA|PARTY+LEADER|CONSERVATIVE|CONSERVATIVE+PARTY|TREURNICHT+ANDRIES|TERREBLANCHE+EUGENE&case_no=F-2000-01524&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

(65 pages) Also quite censored, 'South Africa Entering The 1990's':
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000659145&title=AFRICA+REVIEW;+SPECIAL+ISSUE:+SOUTH+AFRICA+ENTERING+THE+1990S&abstract=&no_pages=0065&pub_date=1/20/1989&release_date=10/9/2001&keywords=ECONOMIC+SANCTIONS|SOUTH+AFRICA|AFRICAN+NATIONAL+CONGRESS|BOTHA+PRIME+MINISTER|MANDELA+NELSON&case_no=F-1994-00592&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

'Prospects For The South African Transition'
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000568204&title=(EST+PUB+DATE)+PROSPECTS+FOR+THE+SOUTH+AFRICAN+TRANSITION&abstract=&no_pages=0026&pub_date=1/1/1994&release_date=7/30/2001&keywords=PROSPECTS|SOUTH+AFRICA|ANC|NIE+94-4|SOUTH+AFRICAN+TRANSITION&case_no=F-1996-01729&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

(1982) 'The Boipatong Massacre':
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000411994&title=SOUTH+AFRICA:+THE+BIOPATONG+MASSACRE+AND+REINING+IN+THE+SECURITY+FORCES+(C+NF)&abstract=&no_pages=0009&pub_date=8/28/1992&release_date=8/8/2000&keywords=MILITARY+OPERATIONS|VIOLENCE|SOUTH+AFRICA|MILITARY+DEVELOPMENTS|INKATHA+FREEDOM+PARTY&case_no=F-2000-00349&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

Then from way back, (1952)
'Probable Developments in the Union of South Africa'
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000119703&title=PROBABLE+DEVELOPMENTS+IN+THE+UNION+OF+SOUTH+AFRICA&abstract=&no_pages=0012&pub_date=10/20/1952&release_date=10/6/1997&keywords=CAPABILITIES|ECONOMIC|DEVELOPMENTS|POLITICAL|SOUTH+AFRICA|UNION|SITUATION|RACIAL&case_no=EO-1993-00518&copyright=0&release_dec=RIFPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

and 1967 'The Liberation Movements of Southern Africa'
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000011831&title=THE+LIBERATION+MOVEMENTS+OF+SOUTHERN+AFRICA&abstract=&no_pages=0024&pub_date=11/24/1967&release_date=1/25/1990&keywords=ANGOLA++++++MOZAMBIQUE|FRELIMO++++++++BAKONGO|GRAE+++++++++++++ZAPU|LIBERATION+GROUPS|MISSAO+CIVILIZADORA|SOUTHERN+RHODESIA|SWAPO+++++++APARTHEID|US+RELATIONS+++++++++USSR|WHITE+REGIMES|indexf199300857|tgdnotsu&case_no=EO-1989-00386&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001

And so much for the 'commie menace' - try this from 1971 'South Africa's Trade with the USSR':
http://www.foia.cia.gov/browse_docs_full.asp?doc_no=0000308034&title=SOUTH+AFRICA'S+TRADE+WITH+THE+USSR+(S-3544)&abstract=&no_pages=0004&pub_date=3/5/1971&release_date=11/18/1999&keywords=SOVIET+TRADE+ANALYSIS|tgdnotsu&case_no=CSI-2000-00005&copyright=0&release_dec=RIPPUB&classification=U&showPage=0001
