Hi guys

I once had a phone, it was a nokia n8. If i took a picture of moving wheel, or water spraying out of a hose, if i had the Xenon flash on, it would take these incredible frozen moment type of pictures, ie the wheel would look as if it is perfectly still, and better yet with water, you see all these droplets in the picture, looks incredible.
I decided to look into this again as i really enjoyed taking those kinds of pictures, however, i am a bit confused on what actually causes the frozen motion picture to be possible, i was convinced at one point it was the Xenon flash on my Nokia N8, but apparently its more complicated than that, I understand now that you also need a fast shutter speed? I would love to hear from anyone who knows how both could have an impact on taking frozen motion images and anything above that.

Thanks guys

Shutter speed. The faster the shutter the more "frozen" the image.

At night though, you'll need a flash else the photo will be black because there's not enough time for light to get to the sensor.

So basically: good light and very fast shutter speed.

Makes sense to have more light because of the speed at which the shutter "blinks".

Thanks.

Hi guys

I cant seem to find any information on this topic but are there any new smart phones capable of frozen motion pictures?
I had a Nokia N8 about 10 years ago which took fantastic frozen motion images alongside its well equiped Xenon flash and very easily too, you didnt need "pro" mode for example. So i would like something with those capabilities.
I have looked at all the top camera phones but non of them seem capable. I have doubts if they would be considering they all have led flashes.

Any tips/info would be appreciated, i enjoyed frozen motion photography and would like to do that in a smartphone.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for?

Thanks Sinbad,
Yes that's exactly what i want to do on a cellphone. I know the Nokia N8 could easily do that. Did you do this with a cellphone? If so what make and model?

Now why would you ask the same question twice?

Huawei p30 pro

The old N8 used a xenon gas tube, which used a vast amount of power to produce a lot of light in a few nano seconds.

LED's on modern phones can't produce the same amount of light in a fraction of a second, so you will need to compensate with more light, or increase the ISO to get similar effects in low light conditions.

Yeah. But the n8 also had a 1200mah battery and it performed fine. I would think that todays phone with +-3 times the power capacity could easily incorporate a xenon flash, ah well.

Sinbad used a Huawei P30 Pro to get that picture. Thats pretty impressive considering it uses a led flash.

Theres atleast one capable smartphone :)

There was no flash in my pic. Just manually set the shutter speed to 1/4000.

Lol its not the same question. Its quite simple really,

The first thread was related to what you would need to take frozen motion pictures, its a photography related question, no cellphone knowledge needed.

The second is about phones capable of taking frozen photography images which to me makes sense to put in the cellphone category because this is where cellphone experts are.

I think people just read nokia n8 and assume its the same question.

It was considered but since seeing sinbads photo using a current day smartphone, I'll probably go for that.
If I may make a suggestion: don't limit yourself with a cellphone. If you're going to get a new cellphone just for photography why not consider a DSLR with an external flash?
