[:)] Hi great ADSL (l)users.
I have had to revert to dialup, using my ADSL PSTN line by the way !!, because "they" reckon FTP is shaped. So now they say I have to upgrade to a 4G line which will only cost ANOTHER R630[}:)] a month so that I can send files which are text and should only take SECONDS to send if I had a decent unshaped FTP pipe.
Oh Yes, and the FTP site is only 10k's down the road !!
I might as well put the files on a stiffy and drive over there and hand them to someone to put on our FTP site !
Or, even better, maybe get a carrier pigeon and they can retype the [:(!][xx(] files for me. It would be a LOT cheaper !!
This realll[xx(]llly sucks !
send me an email[8D] [:(]

This is a point that MyADSL needs to address with ICASA or Telkom themselves. I have seen several ADSL users post similar complaints about FTP uploads. I myself have been victim to this phenomena and find the situation unacceptable. I could only imagine Telkom are Squeezing Port 21 so as to prevent P2P in SA. In so doing they have basically cut off many users that don’t P2P and who simply want to use the services like you do.
I'm not even going to try and blame the P2P people as they are only spending their money on the service, as they wish, but Telkom penalises the rest of the users of ADSL. By telling someone to upgrade to a 4 gig account isn't going to detract the fact that Telkom are abusing their Monopolistic Position in the market to control the ADSL user base. The R900.00 they want for the 4 gig account is daylight robbery. Who besides a very few could afford such an account? Why should we pay for a 4 gig account to just upload a file to a local server, like in your case a mere 10km away? You could just plug a modem into the phone line and do the same job faster and cheaper. No wonder the Creator of Hellkom.co.za still uses a 56k modem. All the uploading to the Hellkom site would have taken ages with ADSL.
What a joke. 56k being faster than an 512k ADSL connection. Only in SA could this happen.
As Telkom would say. We are implementing the product (ADSL) in the manner in which it was designed. Since when was ADSL designed to be slower than a 56K modem?

What irritates me is that if an ACTIVE packet management system is used they'd be able to shape by application type instead of per port.

Loosecannon.

I have a suggestion for you. You air all Telkom's dirty laundry as a anonomous user. Who is going to know who you are. Besides, you will be doing SA a favour. MyADSL needs all the ammunition we can get to produce to ICASA. Consider it your Constitutional Right of Freedom of Speech. If it was me, the floodgates would of opened up long ago.

well to start off with IMHO the person who put ADSL down as a product cut and pasted most of the plan it was not ideal for this country [based on my opinion/experiance in telkoms] they did not nor do they understand the difference between bandwidth and traffic 3Gb vs 512kbs what they should have done was roll out a 64kbs service uncaped at a lower rate ... then a 128/256/512 service at diffewrent rates and levels of capping ... the main reason not to was to protect the leased line service that they over charging for ... telkom data services contribute the most to the obsene profit ...

the calculations as far as i know were based on a standard 64kbs [Diginet/ISDN] and it seems to have been assumed that "64kbs is enough for anyone" 3Gb is the use you will get out a 64kbs line running 50% dureing office hours ...

here are a list of reasonings ive heard
1)ADSL is not meant to be used "lots" it replaces a dialup for fast downloads and email not constant use ie occasional use as you would with a modem banking/email
2)if you need more bandwidth get a leased line
3)it is not a solution for businesses ISDN/Diginet/Martis are ...

the bigest cock up was when they were giving 2 usernames ie 2*3Gb and 4*3Gb instead of multiple login sesions on radius .... and then canceled the extras without warning ... [it was in fact myself that updated the software to do multiple sessions] ...

i was at telkom internet one of the bigest cash cows in telkom afterall they get 100000 users to use a telkom line to call telkom ... there are very few staff do the maths ...

i was not to involved with the potential "iregular" activities ... please keep a eye out for the first few days of the month and notice if speed drops drasticaly ... when all the users are uncaped the service i dont feel is consistant as it should be ...

for telkom to roll out ADSL equivilent to the rest of the world they will have to change the way they do business and drop data rates this will cause there profit to crash ... and they dont need to do this until there is competition and they are doing everything in there power to slow down the proccess .... goverment unfortunately is not impartial in this ... they stand to loose some revenue [taxes will go up to compensate for this so we will pay the same in the long run but it will be more equitable] the bigest looser of course will be SBC ...

in genral the average telkom employee does not give a **** about supplyingh affordable services or been competitive but about bonusus and other perks ... the higher up the ladder the worse it gets ... they are looking after there own intrests not those of the country ...

The last time I tried an FTP test it was pretty fast (local ADSL to ADSL). Upload speed almost the same as download speed. Has something changed recently?

Loosecannon, keep the info coming. It's good to hear some insider information.

Andre. Howzit.
Try other sites to FTP to. I have 4 sites to FTP to. 2 work FAST, the other works when it gets in a gap in the bandwidth and mostly fails and then I have to resend, and the 4th just will NOT work !
It all depends where you are coming into the ADSL network.
