FTTH and small UPS

HI All

I'm in an area with lots of power outages. I'm looking for a small UPS that does not cost to much to power the 1.) Calix Fibre CPE, 2.) Mikrotik Router and 3). Apple Airport Extreme. I would prefer it if the above items could be powered for about 12 hours. The reason for this is so ghat we can still do some browsing/streaming on the phones/tablets.

The FTTH provider equipment is a few blocks away and their power does not go down at the same time as our power, so on that side we are covered for power.

I'm sure someone here has done the same before...

A small UPS won't power all that gear for anywhere near 12 hours.
Have you measured how many watts all of the things you want to power use?

What's your budget?

I have an APC unit at home, I swear by them, and get ~3 hours of runtime which powers my Ubiquiti gear, around 60W. I could get more but I power a NAS and a server for 5 mins before performing a graceful shutdown.

Take a look at this APC runtime chart to get an idea of what UPS to get for 12 hours of runtime https://www.apc.com/products/runtime_for_extendedruntime.cfm?upsfamily=165

Assuming you're using 100W you'll need SMX1500RMI2UNC + 2x SMX48RMBP2U which will give you ~13 hours of runtime and set you back around R43k.

The tool looks like a great concept, I like the fact that you can get an idea of what you will need.
I don't like the cost of the equipment

In my humble opinion UPS's are WAY overrated & stupid expensive. (for what they offer run-time wise)

I invested in deep cycle AGM batteries and a 12/24VDC/230VAC inverter/charger.

MUCH better long term / run-times.

Not exactly sure it'll do 12 hours but for such a small load will last ages.

Can likely get it cheaper etc

A UPS is designed to pick up the loads for the time it takes to get alternative power sources connected. It was never intended as a short or medium term backup solution.

The OP needs a decent pure sinewave inverter, and a deep cycle battery, which I have used before, successfully, into 12-14 hour power outages to keep the router and wifi access points alive, and to charge an iPad or laptop, in other words, keep working while the power is out.

Nope, all that will use switching power supplies which don't give 2 hoots about pure sine wave. Sine wave only required for fridges etc that run off motors.

Not exactly. It also has to do with efficiency. A square wave aka "modified sine" inverter is horribly inefficient. While those wall-warts will happily use such power, you lose in the battery capacity department.

Battery + Inverter = R2500ish which should get you through 12 hours.

My Tik and fibre cpe uses only 3w btw.Standby time for them on UPS ups is 650hrs on 720Watts / 1.2 kVA APC

I was lucky - I guess, while shopping for a solar charge controller I happened upon 2 x 150AH deep cycle AGM batteries that probably fell off the back of a truck.

Paid R1000 each.

+ R1300 for the inverter.
