FTTH packet loss and high latency during peak times

Hi All.

I have a 20mbs Telkom Fibre line and am using Webafrica as the ISP (I have also tried VOX and Axxess).

Is anybody experiencing packet loss and high latency during peak times? I've been having random issues where pages don't load etc.

So after some investigation I noticed that I am getting high ping values and packet drops during peak times, - It gets even worse if i'm streaming, updating a game on steam or running a speed test.

I'm guessing that they are overloading the node / dslam or whatever it is called now.

There is an application called pingplotter that will test each hop between your PC and the destination.

It should at least confirm if the problem is on the Telkom side (the first hop after your Router's IP), or on the ISP's network.

If the packet loss is on the first hop (your router), you may just have a faulty router.


Telkom Fibre infrastructure has one of the same fundamental flaws, as ADSL. Exchange congestion.

Telkom Fibre only solves the problem of poor quality copper on the last mile.

I agree. I had congestion when I was on ADSL. Moved to FTTH and was much better. Now that lots of people have moved over it's starting to slow down again.

I ran ping plotter and get packet loss on 41.193.164.85 which is the 3rd hop including my router.

Thinking of moving to Vuma. Hopefully they'll be ok for a while.
