Funeral parlour owners have marched through the Pretoria CBD to protest against legislation that they said was making it difficult for emerging undertakers to operate.

The demonstration is being organised by the National Funeral Shutdown group and members have taken their grievances to the Union Buildings on Wednesday.

About 70 protesters disrupted traffic and elicited curious looks as they were led by two coffins carried by members of the group.

Convener Thokozani Dladla said they were marching against the red tape set by the government, which prevented growth in the sector.

"The Department of Health defines a funeral undertaker as someone who owns a mortuary. That's our issue - why ownership? Because a mortuary is a mortuary if you can put the deceased, irrespective of who owns the mortuary."

Mortuary, ain't anyone got time for that.

I don't get it. What are their grievances?

They probably think it's easy money - besides the cost of a mortuary.

You might be a funeral undertaker who uses a mortuary owned by someone else. The undertaker is responsible for arranging and undertaking the funeral rites. This includes embalming and burial or cremation of the dead, as well as the arrangements for the funeral ceremony. There is no reason they have to own a mortuary in order to do this.

Yup but if there are a lot of newcomers without a mortuary, the existing ones will run out of space.

The mortuaries have to be able to handle the number of people dying, I don't think it makes much difference if there is one funeral undertaker or 10 using the same mortuary, if the number of people dying is the same.

You have untouchables steal R700 billion from government and no new legislation is introduced to prevent a recurrence. But every second day they introduce some new arbitrary unnecessary ass-backwards law that would be better suited to a functioning economy.
