Galaxy Note 10.1 launches in South Africa

Hmmm... eina. Not bad at all when compared to buying something like the S3 cash, I guess.
But I'm sorry, just searching online how much awesome hardware I can buy with that cash it's obvious that tablets like these are for people with extra money to burn. That, and I'm still not convinced these Android/iOS devices are for everyone. Even tech savvy people I know have tablets gathering dust.

I'd much rather hold out and pump that cash into saving for a decent i5 driven Windows 8 tablet that I can actually use for work as well as home surfing etc. (let's just hope those Windows tablets have lots of options for storage expansion etc.)

No mention if it is 16 or 32GB. The Note 10.1 is an interesting device for sure. Friends dad got one (16GB) for R4000 in teh US 2 weeks ago, so R6000 should be a more "fair" price for South Frica.

He does love the device (also has an iPad 3). Will try to get hold of it for a mini review.

Finally.

Someone who sees the light. Couldn't have said it better.

I never had a reason to actually think about buying a tablet that I have a real use for till Win8 was announced.

You can perhaps try and convince me that Nokia is not the best phone but you will fail anyway, but you can't dissuade me from the merits of a Win8 tablet over iPads or Android tablets. If they say I can buy a Win8 tablet now I would.

Luckily imagining owning a tablet is as easy as imagining myself with a bigger Android or iOS phone around the house, and I've had both. Fact is, they just don't make sense since I know I'll get bored within a week and I'll see no point in making effort to carry them around with me and an R8K device just sitting on my coffee table will make me feel like a douche.
The other problem is that these devices are heavily caught up in hardware cycles, constantly making you feel like you need to upgrade, or that your device can be better.

A Windows 8 tablet would get rid of most of those issues. I'll have a reason to keep it with me all the time, and I'll be glad I did. I can dual-boot the crap out of it and have my work and personal life on the same device, yet separate. And as long as the hardware has enough raw power and connectivity options it'll only start feeling outdated once your software starts feeling underpowered, something which these days happens only in very long cycles (even a decent old dual core x86 CPU with enough memory still has more than enough power for using things like SQL Server and Visual Studio).

Not to mention you'll get a proper SSD drive, not these glorified flash drives they pop into all these tablet toys.

Has anyone been able to find out which version is retailing for R8499?

16/32/64GB?
WiFi and 3G or WiFi only?

This price is insane considering the prices I've seen on Amazon (.com/.co.uk) as well as from Samsung.co.uk... unfortunately none of these retailers will ship to South Africa. Looks like I may be getting one from eBay... thing is that I'm only in the market as my Tab 10.1 was damaged and is being replaced by insurance; not sure my broker will be happy with an "eBay quote" for the claim.

Tab 10.1 was only insured for R7k so there will be a shortfall if I am forced to be ripped off by Samsung SA... hmmm... maybe just use the claim to get an SIII if I can...

Pretty sure the R8499 one comes with 64GB, Wifi and 3G considering the iPad 3 with the same specs retails for exactly the same price. Price fixing comes to mind...

hopefully we can soon get info on the damn Win8 tablets, what, when, how much....
not really knowing specifics about the win8 tablet ito price and availability causes a big waiting game in tablet space... i for one would rather wait a month or two and wait for some specific info on the MS tablets before committing and spending on another tablet right now.
Come on Microsoft! Throw a friggin bone here, when, what price!?

Darn expensive for a tablet. Add a few bucks more, and you have yourself an Ultrabook.

Is this tablet on the list of gadgets that Apple wants banned?

I used my iPad 2 extensively, but then I started using the Macbook Air more, since typing on the screen is a mission. I started using the iPad more for consumption like internet and mostly kindle books, but the new Amazon 8.9" Kindle sounds like a better deal now, since it can do the books, but also consume the other stuff.

Probably need to open a US account for me this time around. So my next tablet will be the kindle HD since the tablets are brilliant for consumption, but suck at content creation, there the macbook air is better.

Guessing the ultrabooks would work too, haven't used one yet, so I have no opinion on them.

ok... so here's the details...

Vodacom have no idea when they're going to have it on offer as "it's still in testing on their network".

I got hold of the Samsung Brand Store near me and they have stock and it's of the 32GB 3G and WiFi version for R8690... ouch!!

If you want to contact them it was the Samsung Brand Store in Gateway (KZN) 031 566 6783. Speak to Caprice, who was very helpful and knowledgeable about the device.

They have no indication of when they will be receiving other models or of indicative pricing.

I have the 32GB wifi +3G for R7800!

Hi,

I'm from São paulo, Brazil. I'm going to South Africa this month and I want to use 3G in my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. I have some doubts:

1) Is it possible to use the SimCard offered by VodaCom in this device?
2) I'll stay in Cape Town. Does the 3G connection works properly?
3) Does anyone know the cost of pre-paid data bundles? I didn't find the values at the VodaCom's website.

Hi Fábio

Yes, you will be well able as long as it is a GSM device. Major centres, like Cape Town, have 100% coverage.

You should also check out MTN and CellC.

Good luck and enjoy your stay!

Good to know. Okay, I'll check.
I'm wishfull to get in SA.
Thanks a lot, Phaktza.

No problem. Please ask around about prepaid prices, unfortunately I don't use prepaid. 3G/HSDPA is available in Cape Town and EDGE should the signal drop off. Let us know how it goes!
