Galaxy S2 / ICS : WTF is "Afrinolly" doing on my phone

So I finally upgraded to ICS.

Nopw I have some crap app called "Afrinolly" which is some west African film fan app.. which I did not request, and I do not want.

But there is no way to uninstall it. I can disable it in the Applications manager.. but I do not want it at all. And why would I get this crap anyway?

(I assume rooting would allow me to remove it.. but I am a little nervous of doing so)

Downloaded something from the galaxy s2 thread here, but it was apparently for the UK market, so I am unsure why I would get a West African app.

The details of the download are:
PhoneFirmware

Phone Brand: Samsung

Phone Model: GT-I9100

Build Date: 03/04/2012

Android Version: 4.0.3

Type: Unbranded

PDA: XWLP7

PHONE (Modem): XXLPS

CSC: OJVLPB

File Name: GT-I9100_ARB_I9100XWLP7_I9100OJVLPB_I9100XXLPS.7z

Yeah that CSC contains is for the following countries:
AFR, ARB, DAM, ECN, ECT, FWD, HAJ, KEN, TUR, TMC

South Africa's codes are:
XFA, XFC, XFE, XFM, XFV

And judging by the File Name, its the Arab CSC for LP7.

Afrinolly.

OK, well, I managed to work out that can disable it, and it no longer begs for updates every few hours... so I guess I will live with the app.

Thanks.

With Titanium Backup, you can freeze it and although it will still be in your phone, it will not feature as an app in the app drawer. It will also not ask for any updates.

NOTE: If you are going to start freezing more apps/bloatware, be sure that they are not required by your phone to run the system!

Doesn't that require root?

I think the later versions of TB does not, but I can not say for sure as my phone is rooted. Someone with an unrooted phone can test this however.

EDIT: I checked the market description and it seems as if root is required. And you need to purchase the app to freeze anyway.

Opera comes with the generic South African official ROM, but you can actually disable it under : Settings > Applications.

Isn't this pretty much what the "disable apps" feature does for free in ICS?

I don't know because I don't use that. I have paid for TB and never looked back. It has saved me hours of work and lots of data costs with the backup and restore features it has.

Agreed. I installed a new ROM last night, including a data wipe. I was up and running (in full) thanks to TB restore - within 10 minutes. That's including my initial Google login. Good retored all my contacts, etc, and TB restored all my apps and data without me having to download them again. Brilliant, and fast. Within 30 minutes I had gone from one ROM to another, with apps intact and the ROM running from a clean install. :)

It doesn't get much better than this. I can test ROMs to my heart's delight (I have another ROM to test this weekend), and still have minimal downtime.

Now IF you used Siyah, you could test roms on secondary and never have to be rid of your favourite rom as primary ... ;)
