Verbatim? Not a well known brand name. I'm not confident enough to buy this HDD :(

Really? Verbatim is very well known. In any case they are only putting a case over existing hard drives (Seagate, WD, etc) so there is not much to worry about.

Just seen Game's latest promotion material. They've yet another external hard drive on promotion 3tb USB 3 compatible with USB 2 external hard drive Verbatim R1099. That's less R367 per tb.

Had 2 Verbatim externals die in the last year.

No thank you.

A very old prospering company, specialising in computer data storage products, also in cahoots (shareholder) with a Mitsubishi subsidiary company producing in their own plants in Singapore and Japan, not made in China then, but licenced companies in Taiwan and India is allowed to produce Verbatim/Mitsubishi products.

They do own technologies like SERL, TERL and MABL which is used in all writable and rewritable media (CD / DVD / HD / Blu-ray) with regeneration (erase disc), audio layers etc. They also owned the previous coating technology use in coating the Floppy… and various other media dye and pigment technologies.

Anyway, external drives are not produced by them and are also not their own product; they however resell those brands as relabelled products, such as this Seagate external drive.

Actually you bought many Verbatim products due to their share in technologies used :D

last 2 that dies on me were samsung.

Well Samsung drives utilised Seagate technologies and Seagate completed acquisition of Samsung’s HDD Business in 2011. Samsung however, this I read when we received several dying Samsung drives in laptops, that they have a unique partitioning that when erased can cause serious problems like sectors and block dying, don’t know should it be the same with external drives.

I've got a few Samsung drives which are all still running fine (> 1 - 2 years old).

Yeh - I don't think its manufacturer specific. I've got various drives up to 8 years old, and not many have died, those that have, are not from one specific manufacturer.

Erm, come again?

This only occurred in their R-series laptops in our case, we even queried this with Samsung and received no response, and then we found an article related to these soft bad sectors. All laptops were older than 2 years with clean install, drive (SMART) failure on boot-up and then slow death.

Just picked up two. My storage needs should be sorted for a long time unless VDSL and 4k resolution become mainstream soon.
