Gaming monitors with refresh rates over 144Hz roundup - March 2023

Word of caution to anyone looking at a VA based monitor:
Can't speak for other brands or models but the R7K LG 144Hz 1440P VA monitor I bought two years ago has awful ghosting. Apparently, it's a common issue with VA panels.

It's a difficult spot right now. Because both IPS and VA have their pros and cons.

There are a few QD-OLED monitors out there, but some of them are burning it already. Which is not OLED's
fault. But QN-OLEDs fault.

WOLED that LG manufactures seems to be doing great with burn it. Maybe I missed it, but I don't know if there are any high performance gaming monitors that use WOLED.

But I'd rather take a VA monitor over IPS.

Yeah I didn't give it much thought when I bought the thing, I just knew that VA black levels are supposed to be great, I'm just not seeing it, maybe 'cause dark scenes on this thing is a smeary mess. I've had cheap LG 60Hz IPS panels in the past that blows the image quality of my supposed "gaming" monitor out of the water. I will definitely never look at VA panels again.

For now I'm just going to stick with it and keep dreaming the OLED upgrade dream.

That is a very nice monitor.

I'm currently using an LG 27" IPS monitor and I really like it a lot. Just the IPS glow is a bit off putting. But I love the monitor. So does my MacBook and Mac Mini

On the plus side for the QD-OLEDs the Alienwares offer a 3 year warranty that includes burn-in which the WOLED ones don't have.

All I would like is a 1080p 24" flat OLED monitor with 144hz, why do they not make them...

That's nice atleast to offer that warranty. So you can game to your heart's content. But WOLED is a lot less likely to burn in. Rtings has proved that.

But these QD-OLEDs are nice an bright.

1080p is so 2010.

I want a 32" 4K 144Hz true RGB subpixel layout OLED monitor with HDR, 2 x HDMI 2.1 ports and full GSync/Freesync support.

I would rather have my ray tracing set to max on 1080p than have it on low/medium @1440p.

I only like the reflections or properly done Global Illumination like Metro Exodus. The RT shadows and RTAO stuff is not very noticeable over decent shadows and HBAO+.

Very old-school ports on these, but that is the inevitability of budget monitors. They are only likely to achieve the 144Hz with 10 bit colour on DP, where the HDMI will be limited to 8 bit colour.

VA monitors are great for text contrast though and the blacks are generally deeper.

If you are not a FPS gamer, a VA monitor is very good for mixed duty.

You've got a dud, I've had that monitor for 3 years now, no ghosting, decent blacks and has been great for gaming and work.

@Jan , nice article, you covered the price points very well. Could you please do one specifications next? Like one on 32" monitors only? And then one in-depth review on multiple 24" / 27" setups, like 4x 24" vs 3x 27" vs 1X 46"? Comparing price / performance / satisfaction on specific specs?
