@jagtiger let's hope you get covered with hspa+ soon. being able to download 1gb in 30 minutes is great!

No need to be covered with 3G+, just take a laptop and drive to covered area; you can load up a large list in download manager and launch it there at day before cap will be refreshed. :)

My experience so far:
Diablo2 (local server) : able to teleport with sorc same as on ADSL
WoW : 40man BWL/MC raids with vent running in background - no problems - 300-500 latency (EU private server)
Trackmania : for the first time the other cars are not jittering all over the place during peak times - and mods actually download before the map starts !! and customn cars are visible as they enter (this NEVER happend on telkom - normally 30-40 minute wait with horrible lag as it was downloading customn data - was on a 384 line)

Yeah gaming is good.. Just get a jitter in cs1.6, its hardly there but you can notice it every 10 or so seconds

Advice, play on german or dutch servers if you wanna game international (uk etc tend to lag). Local always best though (you will get no lag on local).

sounds like good advise, but in mw2 it's pretty impossible to choose where the host is, or whom the host is lolz.

btw, I'm sure I've seen you in game, or somebody with similar nick?

Possibly a stupid question, but, I was on XBL last night with my Cell C connection. I could not find a game on CODMW2 on the international servers as I think the latency was too high. However I was wondering. If you play a 'private game' with a friend in south africa, does it still have to go through the international servers? If so, what is the point of XBL SA?

there is no point to xbl sa. you're still on european servers and a gold subscription and ms points costs about 30% more than it does in the states. just create/use an european account and buy points from www.mspoints.co.za. have you seen how little content is on xbl sa? it's a joke.

Incase any1 was wondering for PC gaming with the 5gb 21.6mbps black modem, i played 2nyt, my downlad speeds maxed at like 1.8mpbs download and like 1.2mbps upload.. I called Cell C told them that my speeds were very slow, they say a tech will come test the signal and adjust some base signal to get better speeds. so holding thumbs..

Ok onto the game part of BLACK OPS online play... If u take into consideration that I have the "fastest modem" and its running at fairly low speeds, what i say below will only be better if u having better speeds than me..

I started playing at about 8pm just finished now, 11:20pm played non stop, my ping hovered at about 80ms (i am in East London incase you wondering) didnt have any big lag spikes was very smooth... (even at low speeds) BANDWIDTH USED, to be exact adding the upload and download, used 88.78mbs....

All things considered when my speeds increase (hopefully soon) should run very very smooth.... Just for those guys wondering about PC and getting the dongle for black ops, from my side thumbs half way till my speed gets sorted then full thumbs up :)

Sorry to rain on your parade but multiplayer FPS generally run well on an adsl 384 line. online gaming comes down to ping and jitter not speed (well unless you using dial up or EDGE than speed matters.). Check pingtest.net

WHat I'm saying is that you should aim for a better connection not a higher speed per say when considering gaming.

That similar to mine, which is somewhere on the speed thread. try it at different times of the day especially when gaming. All you might have to do is move your modem abit. Try a USB extension cord (Try to borrow one). And use MDMA to check your signal strength. I use MDMA and my signal strength is appor 48% and I pretty much have no lag. But note that international hosted games will lag (based on distance etc average ping to UK/Germany is 280 to 350 ms). If I play international I tend to join european games.

Sorry reread your post: your problem with speed not jitter or lag. Try moving the modem or an external antenna.

3G - Suitable for games or not .... check Pingtest.net

I'm playing online games (EVE) with 2 accounts and VOIP (team speak). The main servers are in London (UK - Milton Keynes). "Pingtest.net" gives me a much more important result than "Speedtest.net" as I'm interested in 1) Packet loss ; 2) Ping and 3) Jitter. Download speed / second is already quite fast with 3G and not really the bottle neck. "Pingtest.net" measures the before mentioned 3 factors and then gives an overall score value they call "MOS" and varies between 1.00 (Grade F) and "higher than 4.37" (Grade A) ..... (click on "LEARN MORE ABOUT GRADES" at the summary of your pingtest.net results) for more on what the scores mean.

My experience with a Vodacom 21mbit dongle was that my MOS score was around 4.05 with a ping of about 240 (Cape town to London server). Unfortunately my connection was not stable enough as I either switched to EDGE every now and then or totally lost connection. This caused me to migrate to Cell C. With them I get a MOS of about 3.75 with a ping at about 330. The connection is very stable and I seldom drop. Unfortunately I still cannot play 2 accounts and speak on Team Speak as my gaming members say I break up on coms. (I suppose I can expect this as the MOS score of C and even the B one have comments about lack of performance when using VOIP applications). Do I either have to wait for Cell C to get a better MOS score on Speedtest.net or try ADSL?

Does anyone know what the future holds for Cell C in relation to their ping scores?

Thanks

uhm you can play black ops on a 384 line so 1Mb is faaaaaaaaar too much anyways....faster speeds will not make gameplay better...anything better than 512 is shap depending on number of players. you only need more if you are hosting...
