What about things such as Port Forwarding, etc. AFAIK this can't be enabled on a 3G network so how does this effect gaming.
Cell-C's network currently doesn't allow incoming TCP connections so you hosting some games isn't possible.

This is not a feature of 3G networks, Vodacom have an 'unrestricted' APN which works very well.

Fair enough. I'm luckily not planning on hosting any games. So from what I understand there would be no point enabling something like uPnP or DMZ when using the Cell C sim in a router.

Ok, just to confirm before I run out and buy this thing... If I wanna use it primarily to play WoW on EU servers (Lightbringer), what sort of latency should I expect (staying in Hatfield, Pretoria) - with and without lowerping and the like.

In Vanderbijlpark CellC only offer Edge at the moment. Have any of you guys got 1st experience with the gaming on Edge. as far as i understand max d/l speeds are 1500mbps which i doubt would be good enough. Also i can't seem to get clarity of when CellC will be upgrading the infrastructure in this area. The local store says March 2011 , but i've been promised a lot of things before.

Typo? :erm: :wtf:

Well i dont play WoW, but i do play eve online and blackops (locally) and have basically 0 problems. I play blackops with a ping of about 60ms and eve about 300ms, u shouldnt have a problem in my opinion and worst case scenario u can take it back in 7 days (but u will incur a R350 fee i think).

Just purchased the 2gig stick about 10 minutes ago... was planning to try it out tonight, but the sim apparently takes 2 - 24 hours to be activated :/ My latency on WoW is currently standing at 3000 - 4000ms with my current connection (in other words - unplayable)... hopefully I see results with this thing. If I can get latency of 300ms I will be happy. Are you using any of those other services like lowerping, trueping or battleping?

Been playing for the last 2 hours with a stable latency of 650ms. Much better than before. And only used 15megs :)

yip if u used the black modem (21mpbs) ur connection would probably sit at around 300ms, maybe worth considering especially if u raid

I was under the impression (from previous posts in this forum) that the latency would be the same across both speed stick options. If I had known that the latency was better on the 21mbs one, I would have gone for that instead :/ If I go back to them and exchange for the black stick option, would I have to pay the handling charge?

I play wow over the 21mbps stick, and my latency varies between 290-500ms. I participate in 10man raids, and so far so good. I use smoothping to reduce my latency, but it seems I get better performance during raids if I don't use it (perhaps their servers can't handle the bandwidth requirement, which would be ridiculous). I did not do the Leatrix latency fix.

It's not really worthwhile for me to get the 21mbps stick as I already have uncapped internet through another isp. The only reason I got the speedstick was for WoW as the latency through my uncapped sp is ridiculous (3000 - 7000ms). I will try out smoothping or similar to see if it makes a difference. I have applied the leatrix fix already... strangely if I use wtfast, my latency increases to over 1000ms.

I haven't really been playing for long (3 weeks now), so I haven't started raiding, dungeons or PvP... just been playing the quests and building up my character. At level 20 now with my Human Warrior (Viresh) on Lightbringer EU.

Black Ops SA servers latency as high as european servers

I have been using the 21Mbps stick since launch in JoBurg and the speed and latency has been absolutely fantastic... I play Call of Duty black ops on local SA servers and I get an average latency of around 70ms.

Today however all the SA servers are coming up with the same latency as the european servers (Around 300ms) ... I can't help but wonder if there is an issue with the peering with MWEB that could be causing this problem, does anyone else have the same issue?

Here is the latest speed test I did today, which shows stats of 11.33 Mbps down, 2.45 Mbps up and 38ms ping for the JoBurg Cell C server, so I doubt its a general network issue... the peering issue seems more likely.

I've been playing WoW most of the day today, but have only maanged to get Edge reception from Hillcrest, Pretoria, even after applying the updated software fix mentioned in one of the other threads. Latency is roughly 1000 - 1200 ms. Questing is fine... but I'm getting tired of having to turn down duels and groups because of my high latency :/

Great review.
Thanks for this.
Does online game play on the ps3 use up alot of data?

hey viper!

playing online doesn't seem to use nearly as much as downloading updates, demos, add-ons etc. playing either fifa and uncharted 2 for an hour uses up about 50mb. so it's quite easy on your cap! maybe some games are more heavy on the bandwith, but another game that chews up very little mbs is little big planet. as long as you download the level you want to play to your hard drive instead of streaming it live, you use maybe 1-2mb per level.

Depends on the game. Serious play on KZ2 could eat up as much as a GB a day.

PS. I agree with the great review comment. I cannot wait for availability to come to my area.

Looked like all JHB servers were down yesterday and whenever i played on CPT servers my ping was 200+, im right in assuming that Cell C isnt peered with mweb?

I'm not sure, the only reason I mention MWEB is because apparently they have exclusivity when it comes to hosting black ops game servers in SA... and I'm hoping they havent started routing local traffic destined for MWEB via international links...
