Durban - International tour operators are threatening to "pull the plug" on Durban following the gang-rape of a French tourist, the Sunday Tribune newspaper reported on Sunday.

Quoting Alan Vels - the chair of the Federated Hospitality Association of South Africa - East Coast - the newspaper reported that one international tour operator had already cancelled tours to the city.

He told the newspaper that he was putting together a file of correspondence to give to the eThekwini municipality showing numerous tour operators stating their intention to remove Durban from their tours unless crime was attended to.

The report follows the gang-rape of an official of the French swimming team attending the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Swimming World Championships.

The 26-year old French national had decided to go for a walk with the Belgium swimming coach on Tuesday night when they were attacked near the city's beachfront paddling pools.

The Belgian, a man, was allegedly held down while she was gang-raped.

Police have since arrested four suspects, two of whom appeared in court on Friday.

The Sunday Tribune said the incident was not the first in the city, which is promoting itself as a tourist destination - especially for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

In November 11 German tourists from the cruise ship Amadeus were surrounded by thugs armed with knives and guns and robbed of cellphones, jewellery, cash and other items.

Wonder how Angelo and others would reply! Of course they would find a reason like they should not be in the street after dark, in a coastal town on the public beachfront. Or the usual. What a tourist destination?
Recently 42 dutch tourists in a group was robbed in a black township

Good idea on the tourism part. Start forcing the cities to work on the crime problems.

The Daily News quoted "a source" in the hospitality industry as saying: "This is horrifying, but what were they thinking going for a walk at that time of night?"

In a well run and civilised society one would be able to take a moonlight stroll down an ocean walkway without being gangraped.

Now thats the question.

quite.

In Europe that is an requirement for tourism to flourish. In South Africa it seems tourism is meant to lock yourself in the hotel as moving off the hotel premises at any time of day is dangerous as you can be hijacked, murdered robbed, you just name it.

And of course do not bring a camera or video else you would be targeted, it would be better to purchase postcards and remember leave your cell and wristwatch in the hotel for safekeeping. Better still arrange a police escorts to view the country in its beauty, this is South African bounty for the privilege of visiting here and do not complain else just leave.

And people tell me to visit before I judge .

Rape is the most horrific thing you could do to a woman, and I bet just because she was white they ran up and raped her, now she probably has HIV.

Well if you do visit, I hope you'll have more common sense and adhere to the warnings hotels give you regarding walking around in the wee hours of the morning.

Although I think this incident raises the crime problem in the country, its not advisable in most urban areas to be walking alone/in small groups around cities. Atleast thats what most of the tourist books/guides I've read have told me.

Are the CBD's of any South African city safe to walk around? From what it sounds, I should stay in the suburbs... and stay clear from the city center or any townships.
