What do strange smells, weird booms, strange lights, hot springs, volcanoes, earthquakes, plane crashes, mine explosions, fires, dead fish, dead birds, warmer oceans, stronger storms have in common? Possibly?

At the ocean floor lies a sleeping monster, one that millions of years ago devastated the Earth, causing a mass-extinction, and today could be released again. It is silent, invisible and deadly, and contains double the energy of the entire world's fossil fuels combined. It is the frozen methane reserves at the bottom of the sea; capable of causing massive rises in global temperatures and igniting the atmosphere.

Methane Burps: Ticking Time Bomb
by John Atcheson
The Arctic Council's recent report on the effects of global warming in the far north paints a grim picture: global floods, extinction of polar bears and other marine mammals, collapsed fisheries. But it ignored a ticking time bomb buried in the Arctic tundra.

There are enormous quantities of naturally occurring greenhouse gasses trapped in ice-like structures in the cold northern muds and at the bottom of the seas. These ices, called clathrates, contain 3,000 times as much methane as is in the atmosphere. Methane is more than 20 times as strong a greenhouse gas as carbon dioxide.

Now here's the scary part. A temperature increase of merely a few degrees would cause these gases to volatilize and "burp" into the atmosphere, which would further raise temperatures, which would release yet more methane, heating the Earth and seas further, and so on. There's 400 gigatons of methane locked in the frozen arctic tundra - enough to start this chain reaction - and the kind of warming the Arctic Council predicts is sufficient to melt the clathrates and release these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Once triggered, this cycle could result in runaway global warming the likes of which even the most pessimistic doomsayers aren't talking about.

An apocalyptic fantasy concocted by hysterical environmentalists? Unfortunately, no. Strong geologic evidence suggests something similar has happened at least twice before...

METHANE
Methane is a colorless, odorless gas with a wide distribution in nature. It is the principal component of natural gas, a mixture containing about 75% CH4, 15% ethane (C2H6), and 5% other hydrocarbons, such as propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10). The "firedamp" of coal mines is chiefly methane. Anaerobic bacterial decomposition of plant and animal matter, such as occurs under water, produces marsh gas, which is also methane.

Well, I can think of one possible explanation : whenever there is a big story about something, the various papers like to look for other, similar stories.

For instance if there's a really unusual kidnapping or something that makes it to the front page, often you'll find that other kidnappings that otherwise would not have been reported also start getting attention.

And if you think about it, 10 gas leaks in a day is not really *that* much.

sorry :p
I'm just staring at the damn news items, as they pop up.. dunno what it means (if anything) but its statistically too many darn 'gas leak' type things to be normal. Look on the bright side, you guys are far away from most of these areas.. Of course, if you notice some 'gas leak' type news items in local SA papers, then whatever's happening (if anything) will probably get seen by you guys as well..

EDIT. re 10 gas leak stories isnt much, sure.. BUT.. look at how many of those stories involve gas leaks to the point of 'evacuation' of an area.. that level of gas leak isnt just someones stove..

Gas leaks are common in a piped gas world. As to the rest: yeah, we are deep in the pooh in many ways, above one of them.

I'm pretty sure that in ANY gas leak, the standard procedure is to evacuate everyone just incase.

perhaps.. folks are debating in various forums online at the moment, as to whether this is 'normal' or not as a daily occurence.. given the massive gas stink that spread across NY today, freaking out a lot of people - with no clear cause, its all rather interesting.
Of course, if you hear that the continental USA has collapsed beneath the sea, and a tidal wave is heading round the world towards Africa, just know that I'll be reasonably peeved..

HERE'S ANOTHER ONE
(???)
http://www.hmbreview.com/articles/2007/01/08/news/breaking_news/story9.txt
"Gas leak forces evacuations on Oak Avenue (not sure what part of the US this is in)

Mandatory evacuations are underway for residences on Oak Avenue in Half Moon Bay following reports of a broken gas main.
Police and fire units responded along with trucks from PG&E at 1:11 p.m. today. Around 1:30 p.m., officials were blocking off parts of Oak and Pilarcitos avenues with the smell of gas still in the air.
It was not immediately clear when the leak would be fixed or when residents would return to their homes."

Program was on BBC. Scary. Only +- 25 Years or less from now? Depending how far we are down the road, as nobody knows for sure apparently.

My take, from 2012 on, be ready!

We're between a rock and a hard place at the moment. The only thing keeping the temperatures vaguely balanced is the fact that visible pollution has, in many areas of the world, cut the amount of sunlight actually penetrating the atmosphere down by 20%.

If we cut the visible pollution but don't adress the invisible pollution we're going to see a rather drastic increase in global temperatures. (20% less light [energy] is getting to the surface and the temperatures are STILL increasing...)

It seems that usually, if one checks Google news, the norm is one or two gas leaks each day, not this quite widespread collection all on one day.

It does seem to suggest that something is shifting in the earths crust.

Here's a news item, covering the second day that a school in East Texas is staying closed because of the gas leak.

http://www.kltv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5909897&nav=1TjD
"The gas leak was discovered when a teacher saw a 40-foot high gusher of water spewing out of the school's water well. That's when technicians realized gas was also leaking out. Around 800 high schoolers were evacuated and transported to Panola College as a safety precaution. And a relief well was built next to the school's water well in order to control the gas leak.."

a variety of reasons, the fun one is that its apparently when the Mayan calender ends, which - given their preciseness in mathmatics, astronomy, agriculture and architecture, does make some folks wonder what they might have known..

But they went extinct years ago so possibly they didn't know enough?

Or should we ignore the blatantly obvious and just jump on the end of the world bandwagon again??/??
