Gas smell, no gas in my home?

R134a does not smell like LPG.
As others suggested, gasses from toilet or drains.

On the extreme could be a burglar trying to gas you out.

Gas always settles to the lowest point eg. the floor. Maybe if you are lower down than your neighbour it could be coming from there without you actually smelling it outside.

Any cheap way to identify gas. I know when I had a pipe burst, the plumber use gas and gas detector to detect the leak. It was exactly where the water was coming out under my paving. But nice to confirm before ripping up my pavers.

You say it smells like gas. Does it smell like something rotten? Mercaptan is added to LPG to give it that rotten smell.

I think refrigerant will smell different.

Go buy a canary...........sorry had to.

Are you the only one smelling it, if yes go to the doctor because that's not a good sign.

Not rotten. Just a gas smell similar to lpg gas, but not quite the same.
Not perhaps something like a charger that’s blown up?
Forget what exactly did this in our house once but remember it smelling gas-like but was a capacitor or battery that hade released it’s smoke.

Thanks, I will look in the ceiling and see if I can see if anything is wrong, last time, the copper pipe touch my geyser, and there was a black scorch mark, and at the point the copper pipe connected to the white pex, the pex connection melted.

I had no further issues since. I basically tied the copper pipe up to leave a few mm clearance from the geyser. Thats how shoddy the insurance plumbers work was. I did complain, and they sent out a guy, but no feedback since.

LPG has a very eggy smell, you'll know it
Aircon gas has a more chemical smell
Pooh gas, you'll know it being the fox n all
Electrical burning, completely different and then things would trip

The aircon will smell chemically if you're running it for a long time

LPG gas is heavier than air so it will hang around the floor level and wander around like that... stick your nose right on the bottle, you'll smell it straight away

The fact you said it was in the bathroom, well then it's most likely a non functioning trap, so the sewer gas is seeping up and wafting out, but that is a kak smell and you'd know it... which is odd you say it's more of an LPG smell. Is your nose good? second opinion maybe..

Windows open 24/7 when you sleep otherwise you're sleeping with the fishes

oh and one more thing, if it has rained a lot in your area the water tables shift, this can lead to more back pressure on your sewer pipes, if the venting / trap is not great you will smell it

Ok mr science guy. Depends on the weight of the gas vs what we breathe in. I.e doesn't work like you think it works

Mybb experts at it.

I agree with others. Either you farted. Or something pegged. Under the bed. Outside, ceiling

Flushing the toilette and running the taps won't make much difference if that's the source.

Go open the vents and make sure there are no wasps/bees/mice etc that blocked the vent

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I came home a bit late today. So will be checking everything tomorrow.

Not smelling anything now. But will still check for peace of mind.

The one constant we have identified is that, wherever you are the smell is, hence the wife and daughter also smelling it.

So @kolaval has a point. When you left the smell has also gone away.

Did you find out what was smelling like LPG gas?

Don't leave us hanging in wonder now...I actually read every reply here for once.

Normally your gas will run through copper piping into your house if you have it for cooking etc. As for aircon, its mainly just the outside unit mixed with the inside. Its not a lot of gas with your aircon and you most likely wont smell it either.

Depends where in the house it is. It could be a fridge or freezer as well. May be easier just contacting your household building insurance to send someone to inspect.

Im doubtful on the aircon. Most likely a fridge or freezer if not the line in the kitchen to the stove. they use rubber piping and if old can crack. You can turn off the gas and see, unless there is no gas.
