Gauteng gets "Eye-in-the-Sky" for festive season crime battle

An aircraft equipped with advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) technology is being deployed to combat crime in Gauteng this festive season, Rapport reports.

Starting on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, an ISR-equipped Cessna Caravan has been flying at irregular intervals, primarily at night, to monitor for and provide information on all manner of criminal activity.

Criminals need to send up flares for the aircraft to track them

I don't think any cadre I mean criminal has anything to worry about.

so how many crimes has this thing stopped or detected?

I'm interested in how much these turrets cost, but there doesn't seem to be anything online.
I'm guessing maybe R400k? Might phone Hensoldt on Tuesday and ask them what's up.

So they were kind enough to release a picture with the tail number of the aircraft.

However looks like its not transmitting ADS-B transponder info as its not showing any flights here? Last time it was tracked was by Air USA flying a loop around Titusville, FL, USA.

Can they fly it with the transponder off if its a police vehicle?

Major Tom to ground control...

Nah, waiting for security bots.

Only way to make it bad news is to fit those things with Hellfire missiles.

We actually have people like Paramount who can build stuff like that. Unrelated but now that I think about it, we're weirdly good at making military stuff.
