Gauteng launching new high-tech number plates in April

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the province will launch new number plates in April 2024.

During an interview with eNCA discussing the launch of CCTV cameras around the country, Lesufi said that most crimes in Gauteng involve a car, and having a robust licencing regime will help tackle crime in the province.

Everyone must register their vehicle … If you spend 30 consecutive days in Gauteng, it means your car must be registered in Gauteng.”

How will this work?? Curious.

I guess if you have a holiday home somewhere in Gauteng and you spend 2 months a year there, you will need at least 2 number plates, one for your real home and one for Gauteng, because if Gauteng can enforce that, so can every province. I wonder if eNatis will even allow duplicate vehicle registrations.

I know retired people that travels through the country and camp for a month or two at a place. Does that mean they should register their car everywhere they go?

Common sense would dictate that it would all new vehicle registrations or transfers only. But noooo, can't expect that. Just 4.6 million registered vehicles have to be re-registered.

Also don't understand that one, they say it's because of crime in Gauteng. But if that's the case and this actually works, would it not just shift crime to other parts of the country. If they want to do this then should it be across the country?

It does not help to identify criminals if they don't get caught and gets prosecuted. We all no the process is completely broken.

It won't work.

Many a good long while ago when I used to do the consulting thing, there were times when I'd spend 2 or 3 months in a place consecutively even though I didn't live there.

The reason is really not relevant. They can phase these in over time as part of new registrations or re-registrations. It's an undue burden on motorists imho especially since it's inevitable that 90% of those vehicles will be re-registered at some stage in years to come and a license plate is not a hindrance to criminals no matter how fancy it is.

As if this will fix anything that's broken with the system. You can't fix corruption with new regulations.

And how will they know or prove what time you spend in Gauteng?

Exactly whats happening in KZN. All of us have to get new number plates, not only new vehicles. It automatically gives you a new number when you renew your licence disc. Then you have to buy plates from a government approved place
