500 drones need 500 employed drone operators. 500 less salaries available for police who could be out on the road fighting crime instead of watching crime.

Let's have just a quick peek at the logistics of this:

1. 500 drones require 1500 drone pilots in 8 hour shifts unless Lesufi has calculated the optimum number in the air at any time, which I doubt he can.
2. For sick leave and leave, this number needs to increase by about 20%.
3. Drones need maintenance. This requires aircraft certified technicians capable of handling 500 drones and the equipped workshops.
4. Technicians require spares. That needs supply personnel and buyers.
5. An inventory system that has minimum stock levels, spares lead times and documentation linked.
6. Test facilities.
7. Communication with Air Traffic Control.
8. Any crashes will be subject to CAA investigation.

Even the SA Air Force isn't this size.

I find the comments here lacking vision, if SA got some of those Iranian drones then SAPS can just blow up the criminals in action, no need for police on the ground, prisons, courts,...

Yes, they can just fly one into your house when there's a burglary in progress reported. No more burglary.

Not true. Semi-autonomous drones in the professional / policing industry have been available for well over a decade. One operator can control a number of drones. A drone can completely control itself with given way points to monitor certain areas, including full autonomous take-off and landings.

What happens with Air Traffic Control over Urban areas? And no drone can overfly a police station or national key point:

The City of Cape Town's Metro Police use drones all the time. It's not a new technology or a new way for fighting crime. It's well established in the SA security sector.
That is private sector. ANC government has a way to turn anything into thier benefit. Either sell it, tender it, use it to cover laziness or commit crimes themselves.

I don't know if it's just me or if I have a severe case of déjà vu..

Anyway. These 'drones' will only cost thirty-twenty-eleventy-seven billion each.

The Idiot Lesufi is at it again! It must be fun to be so backwards, stupid and moronic. Look at him, he loves his life and hates whites, what more could an uneducated fool like him ever want, except money, and the issue of the misspent R400 million in his department has not gone away, the media needs to be reminded.

Surveillance is key in this world we live in. The more you have the better. The problem will always be ownership and protection of the data collected.

They can't even get the streetlights working or fill all the holes on every street. But yea sure. Cameras on every street.
There is money to be made in redoing the roads and same holds good for fixing cameras.

Appears there is no money as roads are not being fixed here in the fancy North West and Cowteng... Maybe in the cape..

I would rather spend money on sorting out the prosecution of crime, no one should be getting away with crime. We need a police station in every ward with a management board outside, last 1 000 days, 4 000 arrests, 20 convictions, 200 murders, 4 convictions, the management board can be audited. Accountability with politicians and community being aware of everyone performance.

This guy has been watching too much TV. Just picks up random crap other countries are doing and regurgitates it to the masses and expects them to believe him.

Holdup, maybe I'm old school but I would rather tether blimps around the city with camera's on board and have a few helicopters. Drones are not going to work due to:

  • Large number of skilled opertors required
  • Power constraints of the drones.
