Gautrain expansion plans

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has reiterated the province's plans for a significant expansion of the Gautrain rail network, for which he says the provincial government will invest R120 billion within two years.

The expansion will see the Gautrain's current 80km network expanded to 230km, adding access to new areas, including Soweto, Mamelodi, Fourways, Atteridgeville, Vaal, Lanseria, and Springs.

I have used the Gautrain a hand full of times, no issues except the bus takes a long time.

I live in Fourways and travel to CBD.

If they expand the train to Fourways, I will be using this as apposed to using my car, it should be quicker than using the car and I don't have to deal with all the traffic lights off on William Nichol.

The issue is, this will take 20 years to implement and by that time, I will be retired.

When the cadres get their hands on this it will become metro rail 2.0

The money will be spend on BEE cadre's long before even complete 1km extension.

Ah yes, the people train,.... one that the people themselves will never be able to afford to use,...Typical ANC mentality.

Sure except they've been expanding it for ten years now

The original Gautrain went many billions over budget - graft, corruption and looting. Hey we got a train, but it's not nearly as great as it could have been.

They are announcing this like it's a brand new idea. The truth is that all these expansions and routes have already been planned, evaluated and approved before 2010! The 2nd phase was supposed to start in 2011, now it's being started in 2026, 15 years later. What has been happening during the past 15 years?

Only 15 years? Jees the ANC are really stepping up their gaming at getting better at meeting deadlines.

By the time the expansions happen, I'll be retired and I was in my mid 20s when the expansion was announced

Okay honest question.

First doesn't Metro Rail already serve Soweto and Mamelodi. Therefore, Just improve the Metro Rail Network.

Second wasn't the whole point of Gautrain was to encourage Karen and Sipho who own cars to use the train, therefore wouldn't it make sense for the Gautrain to first expand to Waterfall, Park Town, Parkhurst, Randburg, Fourways, Steyn, Houghten, WITS, UJ, TUKS, Brooklyn, Lynwood, Menlyn, Atterbury, Garsfontein, Centurion Proper, Sunninghill, Morningside, Lonehill, Kayalami, Kempton Park, Lanseria Int, Bennoni and Boksburg.

For safety reasons we will leave out Brakpan

I think 20billion could be better spent in GP than in trains…
