I'm not really seeing the fail here. Is the article just not saying that the province will not pay the additional 1.3 billion rand to push the project completion date ahead to June 11?

The entire project was suppose to be complete for 2010 WC. The entire project, not just part of it. Now none of it will be completed! Therefore FAIL!

Johannesburg - South Africa's R24 billion Gautrain rail link will be finished in time for the soccer World Cup in 2010, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said.

"We believe that the Gautrain will be ready for 2010 and we are doing everything in our power to ensure the construction goes ahead," Radebe told journalists in Pretoria on Friday.

Was never a 2010 project BUT its governments failure for marketing it as part of 2010.
Whenever they spoke of transport they first spoke of this Gautrain which obviously creates some expectations.

The Gautrain 2010 service is only to provide an airport to Sandton service, nothing else.
The new Gautrain buses to provide this link during the tournament have already been ordered.

I hardly think the success of the world cup depends on how fast people get from the airport to Sandton.

He believed it would be ready. It was NEVER a 2010 project!!
I'm sure he is also just referring to the airport link.

Don't think the tourists are here for the Gautrain. Rather fix the Knysna choo choo.

I second that one - just going to cost between R70-120 odd million to fix the line between George & Knysna, as the railway track is starting to look bad after 3 years with no maintenance after the floods.
Now the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is back on track we have water restrictions so it is diesel hauled for now and not steam hauled.
Luckily I caught this opportunity before we see steam again , as the train was out of commission for 3 months
