Gay marriage. Do the surnames change?

DO they both keep their own, does one change his/her name or do they do the weird double-barrel thing, e.g. one is Dlamini-Strydom and the other is Strydom-Dlamini?

I believe anyone can legally change their last name, so it's really a matter of preference.

My uneducated guess would be that it depends on the couple since there are probably no established traditions for this sort of thing.

It is a matter of preference I would say. Many straight people now a days dont take each others names also. I personally would do the double-barrel thing. Provided it it fits with my surname. If he has got a stupid surname then he will just have to change his to mine...finish and klaar! There is no freakking way I will have "Koekemoer" attached to my french surname spank you very much! lolz

When my husband and I got married we couldn't find much information on the internet relating to surnames, but eventually established from Home Affairs that all 3 options are available, both partners keep their own surname, partners adopt a double-barrel surname, or one partner takes on the surname of the other partner. We opted for the latter, and there wasn't a lot of paperwork to sort out at all.

What still frustrates me is that South African businesses are quite clueless when it comes to same-sex marriages. When they ask for your marital status and you say you are married, the next question is immediately "what is your WIFE'S name". A few months back my husband took out some policies with FNB Insurance, and since he listed his spouse (me) as Mr, they loaded him on their system as Mrs.

hehe. Ai tog. I have to admit...if I dont know someone is gay I would also ask what the wifes name is automatically. Guess asking for the "spouses" name is a safer bet now...but it is a habit that will have to be amended.

Thanks. It will be 2 years in October. Was gun-shy at first but now I believe it was the best move I made. Also had sales people ask me what my wife's name was. My reply was a dead-pan "Donovan".
