We tested GeForce Now in South Africa — Play the latest games on nearly any PC or smartphone

GeForce Now could be a game-changer for South African gamers desperate to play the latest popular titles without an expensive gaming PC or console.

Rain's launch of the Nvidia-powered platform is poised to become the country's first to allow people to stream entire games from the Internet to a computer or mobile phone.
It would be interesting to see how playable multiplayer games are, considering the latency, when this is used by many South Africans.

Frame rates should be better on Starfield after Geforce Now applies the recent patch. It benefits Nvidia cards a great deal.

anyone have the link? If I go to the rain page and click on GeForce Now it goes to a blank page rain.co.za

So you don't need an expensive rig anymore with this as an option?

I received the invite to join. Tried multiple times to sign-up, including phone calls to Rain for assistance. No succcess. Rain support is utter rubbish. I think Nvidia chose the wrong local partner.

Is GeForce Now not Windows only? There was no mention in the article what is required. Would it otherwise run under Proton on Linux like many Windows games do?

EDIT: OK looks like it does from https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GeForce_Now. I did not realise it played from inside a browser.

there's nothing new about this tech, was presented not too long ago around 2018 or so. It's cool tech cause it's waaay easier to upgrade the servers however scaleability is also something of a problem. It's cool tech but let's see how things cope with a few thousand players

It makes sense for some people who don't want to invest in a PC or a console to maybe play 1 game a year that they have time for.
100% - I am way past being able to play games for hours and buying a R50 000 PC to play Elden Ring (for eg) is a non starter for me

I'm keen to try it on mobile now. If you have a smart phone and a bluetooth controller, stream pc games to your phone.

I wonder if this is something that a journalist might have mentioned. Or an LLM. To be fair, there does seem to be mention of a Geforce Now app, and a Geforce Now mobile app. And Mybroadband is free.

Rather disappointing to see older cards being used for this, especially when it will take time still for the service to leave beta and to grow in subscribers over time. They should have started on a strong foot with 4060's and 4080's.

If we get an ultimate plan I'll check it out, but the main appeal of a gaming PC for me is the ability to mod games like Starfield, No Man's Sky and Elder Scrolls.

Just waiting for them to add bigger packages cuz this 3 hour package is just never enough especially playing open world games.

I've been testing GeForce Now Beta for a little over a month now, and overall, it works pretty great. Most games run at a locked 60fps at Max Settings, although some require a bit of tweaking to reach that, which is expected of an RTX 3060.

However, one caveat I've noticed is that certain games run poorly regardless of how much tweaking I do. I went to YouTube to check out some benchmarks and saw that my GeForce Now FPS was considerably lower than what was shown in those benchmarks. Although the overlay always indicates an RTX 3060, the actual FPS I'm getting is that of a much slower performing graphics card.

The worst performing games I've seen so far from the few games I've tested are Immortals Fenyx Rising and Fortnite, both averaging between 30-40 FPS at Max Settings, which is unreasonably low for an RTX 3060 and more comparable to the performance of a GTX 1060. Surprisingly, the Fortnite clone Farlight 84 runs incredibly well in comparison. Running at a capped 240 FPS at all times even with the highest settings (that doesn't require a restart). Despite having to set Fortnite's settings at the lowest possible settings and run it at 50% resolution scale (540p) only for it to peak at around 150 FPS is just pathetic.

The performance in games seems vary considerably from one game to another, ranging between a GTX 1060 and an RTX 3060. This means you could get something like an RTX 2060, or a GTX 1660, so it's just not consistent in what graphics card you could get, Here's an Album showing the performance of some of the games I've tested:

It's an it depends, I use the Xbox ones here in Europe, 20ms latency about.

It is noticeable depending on the kind of game you play, with forza it wasn't noticeable at all until I bought the pc version and played directly, after that I noticed the added input latency, but it's not really going to stop you from enjoying it.

Most games that are single player, especially where you're used to playing those games on console with a controller, no real issue (grounded, and some others I played).

Unlike the other on this thread, I would guess most would actually notice it in a shooter once past casual, just has to do with delay and framerate streamed to you, so you won't react fast enough for strafe shots etc., but games that are more tactics etc. It will be more forgiving.

I'm still sad about stadia, as they were actually developing games that worked based on it all being on server.
