Generator or Inverter for residential use?

Inverter never fails to deliver.

Not sure how an 8kw inverter can generate in excess of 9kw. Currently using 6.45kw to charge the batteries and 2.54kw to run the loads.

I think the DC(pv high voltage) to DC(48v for battery charging) conversion is different to the DC(pv/battery) to AC(load). View attachment 1133152

Nice.

So can you charge the battery with PV simultaneously whilst supplying the load.
I thought the load only gets supplied “after” the battery is charged to 100%

There's a setting to set what gets done with pv. Either load or battery charging first.

Mine is load first then battery.

Would you mind sharing how to prioritise battery?

If the menu is similar to mine, is it under system 1 settings?

I finally have the details of my system.

Quite old from the looks of it.
16 panels
Think Power S4400TL inverter

The manual says the system ties into the grid. No mention of additional battery backup capabilities etc.

Right now we generate 15 to 20kw per day and as a result the little wheel on the old meter spins in reverse during the day effectively building up a reserve for us in the grid to use at night.

Total units used in a day is about 3 to 5.

Any way to add a backup to the house for loadshedding without changing the inverter?

I have a high current input into the DB that connects to my generator. It has it's own switchover lever for when the generator is connected to the house.

Worth looking at adding something like a large UPS that I can keep connected to the house to stay charging and then using using the same switchover lever that the generator would use when the power is out?
Yes, you can add your backup system using the same generator changeover switch. You can install separate panels for it or take from the existing panels.

I have sunsynk with 2 pylontech batteries. No solar panels.

Replaced DB because had constant earth leakage trip last week.

But now when I switch inverter on no power. Nothing trips.

House runs on eskom.

Any advice ito how to get inverter running. SOC stays on 19, now 18% and not charging nor providing power.

Did you press the green power button?

I can't see from your pic if the AC light on the inverter is on.

Are there any errors in the inverter?

I would check the wire on the grid connection and trace it back to the DB to make sure it's connected correctly.

Press the button - no but it seems on

AC light is on. I checked that.

No errors. Thats the strange thing other than low voltage yesterday when DB was being worked on.

Yep electrician coming as this seems only explanation. Inverter Not connected?

The screen being on is not an indication that the green button is on. I think as long as the battery is on it will power the inverter screen.

What happens if you switch the batteries off using the button on the pylontech batteries?
If the AC light is on then its picking up the grid connection.

Did they perhaps not mess with the CT coil?

Dunno. Will check with them. CT coil may explain the Eskom power, yet inverter not on.

Eish lets see what they do.

I didn't even notice that the switch was set to Eskom and not inverter.
Lol, I fell into that same trap when I was playing around with my new installation. Forgot about the changeover and was wondering why my inverter stopped working

Works!

I feel stupid BUT had tried to switch on and seeing no difference thought I switched it off.

But top left on screen shows if on or off.

Battery charging now and now on inverter.

Thank you all.
