Generator or Inverter for residential use?

So they had a jerry can near a running generator?! My jerry can is stored away from the genny whether it's full or empty (especially when empty).

Yes but other units will break down. When Eskom says 16,000MW is offline due to breakdowns, it doesn't mean that some units will return and all will be good. It means that at any point in time, that's how much is offline due to breakdowns, whichever units those may be. It's no different to having a fleet of 1960s Beetles, each with 500,000km on the clock...

The amount of generation offline due to breakdowns has also been increasing over the last few years. At one stage I was shocked that it was at 12000MW and now we are at 16000MW. Add the 5000MW odd that is on planned maintenance and there is more than 20000MW unavailable at any time. To put into perspective we typically need between 25000 and 30000MW to power the whole country. So the amount of generation that is broken could run the whole country almost.

Or shale gas is gonna happen irrespective of the pushback

Gas plants are quicker to build
 
Talisman tool hire is testing out a VAWT at their strand branch. Supplier will start selling these soon.

Coct electricity inspector popped in today. He to take a pic of my meter and was on his way. I guess CoCT is not happy with an almost zero electricity usage.

They probably haven't targeted the area he lives in.

In my case, the suburb was earmarked for the replacement of all disc meters which is why they hounded me - I was one of the last of the holdouts :ROFL:

Could have been happily spinning that disc backwards now....

You left out the solar farm needed to supply power to the house and charge the batteries in your solutions that won't work...

Battery/inverter fused switch disconnector, 5 kVA inverter.
Anyone running on 125/160's & done so without it blowing?
Victron says 200A, Sunsync 150A...an old time installer that i'd listen to talking about uses 125A.

Any mybb opinions?

To 160A 00 size disconnector a bit more space/price friendly than a 250A 01 size but don't wish to need to buy twice.

Believe Pylontech batt cables are 25mm2 so there another argument.

5kW at 48V is 104A. Anything above that should be plenty.
