Taxpayers have forked out millions of rand to send a delegation of more than 50 people, which includes President Cyril Ramaphosa, to a 12-day International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Business Day understands that the delegation is among the largest at the gathering and will include officials from the newly reconfigured employment & labour department and other stakeholders, such as trade unions. The department paid for air tickets, hotel accommodation, transport and cash allowances payable on international trips, according to those familiar with the details.

Ramaphosa is leading the delegation and is due to leave for Geneva on Monday. He was appointed in 2018 as the co-chair of the ILO’s Global Commission on the Future of Work alongside Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

...

A source at the department said some members of staff were concerned that SA is sending too many people. "People are talking in corridors that SA is sending the largest delegation to the conference, compared to other countries."

The official said some had dismissed the trip as an excuse for a "jol", paid for by taxpayers.

"This cannot be reversed, everything was done a long time ago regarding air tickets, hotel accommodation and the like.

"If we cancel now, we are going to incur exorbitant costs. This trip has cost the department millions as it were."

And the entire delegation gets spending money too. Because it really is too much to ask for an already highly paid person going on a free all expenses paid trip to pay for his own souvenirs, booze and hookers.

50 people? So 5 people are going and the other 45 just happened to want to get to Geneva and back? Like someone from the township going to town and there's space in the car?
