Again, hardly a random tourist planning on seeing the sights.

Come on, this is getting silly.

We can't provide evidence of more tourists killed that can be counted on one hand, yet we have some claiming half the tourists who arrive never make it back home.

So no, my issue with the statement is that the number of 3 is almost surely completely bullshyte (especially if it comes from Lindiwe), but her follow on assertion that SA is "Safe" for tourists is absolute bullshyte and should be called out for the crap that it is.

SA is NOT safe for tourists at all... Yes the vast majority can come and have a great time, but there is a heightened element of risk for random crap happening here unless you stay within the little protected bubble of the private game reserves or high end resort hotels.

Here are some more - still not 10 yet ( over a 28 year period )
Ton's of knee-jerk indignation from Ian Cameron, but again no actual stats or references.

“Sorry, what South Africa are you living in? It’s a disgrace you lie how you do to the rest of the world, all to save face.

I'll ask again, where in the world is it safe to go anywhere at any time ?

Easy fella. It seems to me that it's the witch that needs to get her priorities right and start looking at the whole country and it's citizens, not just the tourists.

Sure we live in a violent society and are sick of the crime, but it doesn't hide the fact that I still tell everyone I meet to come to South Africa, you simply won't get a better holiday anywhere (imo)

I'll answer the question, largely nowhere in the world is it always safe to go anywhere at anytime, but in the vast majority of the world it is safe enough to be out and about most of the time, in SA that would be a bad move.

But at @Spizz says, I do still tell people to come here on holiday because it will be an epic holiday.. but tourists (and locals) just need to be aware of their surroundings pretty much.

Why lie and go with that particular number though? Why would she not attempt to BS the world with a broad term like 'handful'?

Fudge the local crime stats as much as you like but the whole planet has access to the google machine, Lindiwe, you dishonest sack o' schite.

Maybe I'm just used to it here, but I was in Philippines last week and with the warnings and advice to given to you pre-travel, it seems to me like a whole new level of bad ass over there so I'm walking about on high alert at all times. But again, the flights were full with plenty of tourists and the restaurants and bars are full of Europeans.

Of course nowhere is 100% safe, but it is up to the individual to do your research in advance no matter where you go and plan so you don't make a wrong turn if you are out and about. And for tourists coming here, the tourist trail is well established and imo as safe as pretty much anywhere else.

I would love to, just don't have the facts to disprove her claim.

Sorry, but you lie, you lie, is not a fact.

If you insist she is lying, prove it.

As one should do as a citizen, as one should do as a tourist and something anyone in any country should do.

At a glance, more than her BS number as shown early in the thread. I'm way too busy right now to be searching and attempting to tally any sort of conclusive total but she's discredited right off the bat.

So basically no facts from the google machine.

Sure, 3 is wrong. I suggested the number of 10, but we can't even prove that number.

Less than 10 tourist murders in 28 years.

With an average of 15 million tourists per year that's around 420 million over the period.

Your chances of being murdered as a tourist is 0.000002381% - that not safe enough ?

Do you believe her?

Do I believe the number of 3, no.

I have proof that that number is higher.

Do I believe SA is safe for tourists, I do, with the usual precautions a tourist should take anywhere.

See I tend to think differently.

Do I believe SA is safe for tourists, by and large I would say its ok for tourists from a safety point of view. Should they take the usual precautions a tourists takes anywhere? HELL NO, it needs to be more. With just taking the normal precautions a tourist would be ripe picking for the petty crime we suffer with in this country, and would be at a much higher risk for more serious crimes (hijacking, mugging etc).

But in many ways I think that is largely secondary to the issue, for me at least. Lindiwe Sisulu has lied to the public and world at large and that is entirely unacceptable.

From a murder point of view I guess they are, they only make up 0.7% of the population.

From other crimes point of view, I would say they're at higher risk as they can be targets in "touristy" areas.

Irrelevant.

Why say three if it isn't three? This isn't something trivial like what stage of loadshedding we were in when the latest murder happened.

The same reason JvR arrived here "2000" years ago. Because these people are 1.) only concerned with numbers when it comes to how many millions of taxpayer rands are illegally pouring into their bank accounts, and 2.) they are emboldened liars who aren't used to having their BS called out.

I can only assume that she chose that figure in the hope that international news outlets would latch onto it, spread it as gospel and go unquestioned.

Hardly a random tourist murder but let's include it..

That brings the total to 4. Do you have 6 others ?

I have definitely heard of many more. Google is overwhelmed and with this one making it impossible to search. I'm not very good at google.
