I have yet to see traffic light hawkers and beggars in the EU or UK...

considering that South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries in the world not at war, it does make sense to take special precautions.

  • Carry a whistle on you, to draw attention if there's an emergency. (Have your head blown off for trying that)
  • Always carry a map (electronic or paper) with you in the event that you do head off course (although being seen with a map is a giveaway that you're a tourist). (Facepalm)
  • If in any doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice. (Hahahaha!)
  • Book your hotel room between the 2nd and 6th floors of the hotel, as being on at least the second floor creates a gap between yourself and dangers near reception (e.g. robberies, car-bombs, shootouts, etc...) (So, it's safe then?
The level of crime in South Africa is unfortunately high and caution must be taken! Robbery, armed assault, carjackings, muggings, theft and pickpocketing occur everywhere in South Africa. Do not make yourself vulnerable to these criminals. If you take care and stay alert you have less chance of experiencing this crime.

Safe you say?
You have gypsies instead. Which are almost as bad.

Safe you say?

I'm surprised you find this so difficult, I really do.

Nothing is 100% safe, anywhere in the world.

If tourists wanted a 100% safety guarantee before going anywhere in the world, there would be no tourists.

Is it extraordinarily unsafe to tour SA ?

15 million visitors a year don't think so.

I have seen them in the UK, more often than not they are of the window cleaning variety and get moved along fairly quickly

In SA they annex the crossing and defend it. They never get moved on. Drivers and cops are no longer even aware that it's an offence to hawk and beg at an intersection.

The absolute argument again. What are your chances of being a victim in SA compared to Europe or the UK?

So absolutes rule your argument then? Or should you try probabilities?

The probability of being murdered as a tourist as I've said is 0.000002381%.

That sounds like the probability of being eaten by a shark.

Why do so few get eaten by sharks in a country surrounded by sharks.

We know there are sharks, so we take steps to avoid them.

Don't go where previous attacks have taken place.

Don't go in the sea at night, 'cos you can't see sharks in the dark.

Swim where there is some protection, such as shark nets.

Swim alone, and you're the only thing on the menu.

The precautions you can take to avoid the chances of criminality are much the same.

You want a zero probability of being shark food, stay on the land.

You want a zero probability of being a victim of crime, stay at home.

There are no absolutes.

I've lived here for 65 years, never been mugged, robbed, raped, shot, shot at, kidnapped.

Does that mean my country is safe, not even close.

It just means I'm cautious, aware, and not a complete moron with less common sense than a thimble.

But I thought the minister said the county is safe. Are you disagreeing with the minister? You must be a racist.

The problem is that tourists from Europe and elsewhere are not used to living in the warzone that is SA. Would you imagine anyone in South Africa leaving a baby unattended outside a shop?

Heck, even people who live in SA are complacent. Especially those who live in security complexes.

Because you know the dangers. Had 65 years to see the worsening situation. Tourists land on a blank card.

Warzone ?

I don't live in a warzone.

Are there war zones in the country, certainly.

Is the whole country a warzone, certainly not.

Do I go to the warzones in the country, I do not.

Am I safe because I don't go to warzones.

So far.
