Lets rather stick to CBD's instead of cherry picking spots.
He's cherry picked spots himself. He could have picked Marshall town but has instead picked some taxi rank in the city. Who even knows what the hell he picked as he seems to have googled "nice parts of xxx foreign" and "shitty part of Joburg".

Here are some more - still not 10 yet ( over a 28 year period )
Ton's of knee-jerk indignation from Ian Cameron, but again no actual stats or references.

I'll ask again, where in the world is it safe to go anywhere at any time ?
This isn't about raw numbers as much as perception, very few people care about actual raw numbers.

People overplaying the risk certainly don't help, but neither does pretending it isn't an issue. Crime in SA is a real issue and it will spill over into more touristy areas.

Tourists will also not go and do extensive reserach on which areas to visit and which not to.

Does it look nice? Does it sound reasonably safe? Is the price right? Any of those that are a no, blows us out of the water and they rather go somewhere else. Choice is a funny thing that way.

The probability of being murdered as a tourist as I've said is 0.000002381%.

That sounds like the probability of being eaten by a shark.

Why do so few get eaten by sharks in a country surrounded by sharks.

We know there are sharks, so we take steps to avoid them.

Don't go where previous attacks have taken place.

Don't go in the sea at night, 'cos you can't see sharks in the dark.

Swim where there is some protection, such as shark nets.

Swim alone, and you're the only thing on the menu.

The precautions you can take to avoid the chances of criminality are much the same.

You want a zero probability of being shark food, stay on the land.

You want a zero probability of being a victim of crime, stay at home.

There are no absolutes.

I've lived here for 65 years, never been mugged, robbed, raped, shot, shot at, kidnapped.

Does that mean my country is safe, not even close.

It just means I'm cautious, aware, and not a complete moron with less common sense than a thimble.
You have been incredibly lucky.
More actually. Where do you live? Pollsmore?
The odds are you are going to get nailed sooner than later.
I'd be very very careful if I be you.

But I thought the minister said the county is safe. Are you disagreeing with the minister? You must be a racist.

The problem is that tourists from Europe and elsewhere are not used to living in the warzone that is SA. Would you imagine anyone in South Africa leaving a baby unattended outside a shop?

Heck, even people who live in SA are complacent. Especially those who live in security complexes.
They are more used to it than you might think since the great diversification of Europe has taken place over the past 20 years.

The ambassador is a believer,

The relationship takes the priority, but I had a look into him, and he sure seems to be enchanted by our country.

The German media are a different matter however

Until they don't. This is news now, will it be news tomorrow?

For us, the state, this is an inconvenience. Does a case like this deserve more resources than any other? No, but it is in tourism's best interest to produce results to persuade a positive public opinion.

Generally, our country needs to do better, and it is more involved than only policing.

I think he lives in the UK.

I’m from Edinburgh and I’ve had a few incidents there. Worst one was I got mugged at knifepoint in the Grassmarket, which is a party area full of pubs and clubs. Guy had a blade at my throat demanding money. Granted it was 2 am and I was pretty drunk, but the fscker robbed me of my taxi fare.

Lol, you do know there are dangerous areas in London and New York where you a tourist can't just wander about? Sure Joburg is largely wholly no go at night but I wonder how you picked those pics. You claiming no one goes there even by day is absolute nonsense as people who rely on the city fill the streets daily.

I do know that. Are they as extensive as the dangerous areas in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town for a much bigger population? And city centres?

How did I pick the pics? Personal experience. I've been to all four places at the times specified. Want some more EU city centres by night where I've been?

Nicely selected photographs and a tad disingenuous fella. Why not put in the Waterfront or Stellenbosch?

Been to all of them at the times mentioned. Actually lived in them. Because the waterfront and Stellenbosch are tiny islands free of crime. Dare you to walk out of the heavily protected island.

Again, hardly a random tourist planning on seeing the sights.

Come on, this is getting silly.

We can't provide evidence of more tourists killed that can be counted on one hand, yet we have some claiming half the tourists who arrive never make it back home.
Who claimed half????? You are yourself now guilty of what you are alleging. You are right, that is silly.

Oh, it wasn't daylight and you didn't get shot for your taxi money while sober? Welcome to SA.
