Germany will count on coal to keep it warm and the factories running should the supply of Russian gas and oil stop.

As Germany closes its last nuclear reactors, it is also reactivating old coal power plants to ensure electricity supply security amid Russian threats to turn off the gas tap.

Germany’s attempt to simultaneously phase out nuclear and coal power just got significantly more complicated. Once envisaged as a transition fuel on the way to renewables, fossil gas is being reconsidered in Germany after Russia invaded Ukraine.

“Coal will play a crucial role,” said Olaf Lies, the energy minister of Lower Saxony. “That we choose this phrase once again is certainly not entirely self-evident given the country’s plan to phase out coal by 2030,” he said during a press conference on Tuesday (8 March).

They gonna dust off old, unused, neglected technology.

and it will STILL work more reliably than Eskom's power stations...
I doubt they were neglected. More likely shelved in a correct and sustainable manner.

Now I wonder if they have the sort of coal reserve/supply chains available to feed these stations.

Germany has large brown coal deposits. It burns dirtier, and less efficient, than anything we have in SA. Shutting down nuclear and switching on this stuff is an absolute win for the environment....

And here is the real cost of Putin's war

Its not the thousands killed,
Its not about the millions of dollars waisted in destruction.
Or even the millions of homeless and uprooted families.

Its about killing the millions in the future due to climate change.
The billions of dollars that's shifter from science and innovation budgets that was meant to build being reallocated to militaries instead.

All so that the puppet masters across the globe can brag about the size of their empires.

It's Strange that not even the IPCC suggests that billions will be killed in the future.
The whole global warming story is just a PR front for the Energy sector.

So choosing coal over nuclear? I am certainly in "awe" of their "high tech" thought process.

Russia stands to gain from this in the long term, collosal land mass in the north that increasingly defrosts and makes space for more suitable habitable and agricultural land.
