Today, in SA, ADSL is mainly used for basic internet access, for which the fastest of its services is more than adequate, Samuels says.

4Mbits/s might arguably be "adequate", but what Telkodemonopolies' Samuels implicitly admits is that both 384kbits/s and 512kbits/s are woefully inadequate and pathetic and should not even be referred to as being broadband.

Basic Internet Access only consists of browsing one pr0n pic a day, reading two or three clips from News24, one Youtube viddie, 100 emails, 10000 spam mails...

What about us power users who DOWNLOAD Linux ISO files because we have to?

Things cannot change for the better till telkom removes or drastically increases the cap 3gig isn't enough start from 10gig.

And perhaps the target for installation of 30 days - whilst thats the legislated target - is way too long. The long term aspiration should be real time activation - why not? It should be possible to achieve 24hour activation now if the infrastructure is in place - its only a matter of some online config and a bit of wire to the DSLAM in the exchange.

And that ADSL is only used for 'basic internet access' as a statement of fact is doubtless true. Until there is the speed and affordable bandwidth we cannot do more. Until broadband feels psychologically like the a limitless connection people will be careful and avoid 'wasteful' applications to make sure they have access to their email.
Equivalent to the retail store that only stocks and sells one of a particular item a week - "by there is no demand for this product, we only sell one a week...". There clearly is demand.
