The other option is to use something like this http://www.comx-computers.co.za/GS-HT-503-Grandstream-SIP-ATA-2x-10-100-LAN-Buy-p-55030.php The important thing here is it has an FXS port (which allows you to plugin an analogue phone) and an FXO port (which allows you to plug the landline into it so you can get incoming calls on the landline redirected to your VOIP phone.

In normal operation, you make outgoing calls using your normal phone, but it is redirected over a VOIP connection, so you get the cheap calls and incoming calls get passed through to your normal phones. But in the even of a power failure, you can still call out on your normal landline.

The other option is to get an FXS only gateway such as this http://www.comx-computers.co.za/GS-HT-802-Grandstream-SIP-ATA-1x-LAN-2x-FXS-Buy-p-153116.php which allows you to keep your existing phones but use a VOIP service for your incoming and outgoing calls. This is the option I chose because like most people these days, I hardly use the phone for voice calls and the gateway was much cheaper than buying a VOIP phone.

If this is the same Geoff D from the DSTV forums, then I won't argue with him..he knows his stuff when it comes to anything wired, cabled or plugged in :)

Okay well seems some misleading info here. You can port your telkom number to any voip provider that allows porting.

You are not FORCED to now buy a VOIP phone..... Most routers like B315 LTE router and Huawei Ecolife ONT have a voip option where you simply add your voip providers details and plug and phone into the the telephone port and you are done.

Freshphone was a good suggestion as they charge no monthly fees. Pay as you use for calls. Their call rates are meh but for a free monthly service it's not.

VOIP will work over the internet so fibre goes down so does the line unless you maybe setup a LTE or 3G backup connection.

I have fibre with A360 with a Huawei ONT. So I added my B315 with power bank to the setup as a normal router with a prepaid simcard as a backup.

Simple setup works great.

I am sure it does. For me it is about a phone service that is totally independent of local power etc. Unless Telkom come along and pull out the PSTN switch in my area or recover the copper, my analogue phone stays exactly where it is, on the copper line. They will pry that analogue handset out of my hands before they bury me! :)

I've been on cordless since the 90s which requires ac power, if the power dies I still have my cell, it's never been an issue.

Just load the voip app on your cell phone. While at home connect over wireless. If not over LTE
No reason for anything copper connected anymore

Yip, ported my landline number to Freshphone (once off cost. no monthly billing) when my fibre line was installed.
Once ported, cancelled my telkom ADSL and telephone line.
Installed the VOIPER app on my cell phone and configured my Freshphone details.

No more telkom land line.
Now I pay only for the calls I make rather than a monthly line rental.
Happy days!
