Hi all, I've been trying to get JmIRC to work on my cell phone, I'm using a 6230i, and I've got my GPRS working fine, I can surf using opera mini, etc. but whenever I try and open JmIRC and I press 'connect', it says "access point information needed" and then I'm required to fill in a username and password for this access point, I don't normally need any information to allow web access or whatever, so I really don't understand how to get this to work.

Any help, much appreciated! Thanks!

hey mook, did you create a separate access point in 'personal configuration settings'? if you have, try editing it by putting a space in both the 'user name' and 'password' fields.

it won't influence your gprs connection in any way, but i've discovered that the phone is 'unhappy' if these are left empty, so doing this keeps that prompt from appearing every time, at least for me... ;)

Well at the username and password fields you just leave them blank like you do for mxit to work..if you added an extra access point for mxit then you should just leave those fields empty. I also have jmirc on my 6230i and it works fine..if you still cant get it to work post back and ill check how i have it set up.

I don't understand what you mean by 'mxit' I have been putting in blanks and just saying 'ok' but then when it tries to connect nothing happens and it eventually times out.

I'm gonna try using a space now, but it seems to be a problem with using Vlive and I can't get around it.

i don't have a vlive handset, so i'm not that familiar with it, but can you connect to something other than vlive when using the 'vlive' apn? have you tried using the 'internet' apn?

I dont think the vlive apn will work with java apps. Just create a new apn called 'internet' and try connecting using that apn.

On pre-paid phones, you'll need to create the internet APN and use that to connect to the web.

On contract phones it's done automatically. (The switch from VLive to internet APN)

I'm on prepaid. I can get opera mini to work perfectly, but Jmirc still doesn't work.

I have gotten MXit now though, and it's working fine.

Yes, it makes sense.

You'll need to use the internet APN for any other services.

MXit isn't really web based browsing like Opera is though, it also asks me for my access point username and password, but in this case I can just leave it blank and it works fine.

I really don't get it!

On any of the APN's you don't need to enter a username or password.

Vodacom controls what content can be see via every APN, the internet APN is completely open while the VLive APN is only open to the VLive portal and a few spesific applications.

So, in your case, you must switch to the internet APN to do JmIRC.

MXit does use port 80, btw.

I'm so impressed with this MXit thing I'm completely shocked. Is it possible that it's a first even in the international market? Anyway, I'm so disappointed in myself for not even knowing about it. I'm gonna have to diss my friends studying at Stellenbosch for not knowing about it!

Holy crap, it's incredible!

Anyway, vodacom3g, I still can't get jmirc to work, I've tried using internet as an apn but nudda. What is vodacomlive anyway? To be honest I don't really understand all this stuff very well!

lol, mook, never seen anyone get quite that excited about mxit before :p

is the phone not creating a gprs/edge connection at all, or is it just not connecting to the irc server you specified? i just tested it on my phone (also a 6230i), and it worked fine...

I'm trying to connect to irc.shadowfire.org

Nothing happens and it eventually says: "error trying to connec to irc server, aborting... Exception: Error occured whilst opening connection."
