So I'm getting lots of calls from an unknown/private number recently (8 calls just today). The weird thing is when I pick up it automatically hangs up.

Any idea what this is? Is it like a automated call center thing that's bugging out?

Usually it's some criminal trying to annoy you to the point of you turning your phone off at which point they do a SIM swap.

Install Truecaller. 99% chance you will see who it is, that it has been flagged as spam before and that it will not ring on your phone, ever again.

Someone calls you that is not in your contact list, 99% chance that person's name and surname will pop up on your phone. Saw it in action when I placed an ad on Gumtree. People were surprised when I greeted them by name.:D

As for private business numbers that are usually hidden, someone somewhere would have had a call from them and then added them as a contact. So that private number now pops up as Discovery life.

I think most Android phones have built in call rejection. I just set up a block for private numbers.

Well technically there is a number...but it's just not displayed.

So I guess Truecaller could access that underlying number if the device allows it.

The network doesn't send it.

He's still wrong.
Truecaller just reads the incoming CLI and maps it to a name.
Private number = no CLI.
What I think happens is that Truecaller ads your contact list to the database. So you get a call from Discovery, flag it as spam and ad a contact name to the number. That is the "CLI" that then gets used and pops up on the next guy's phone.

/sigh

If the next guy's phone is not sent a CLI from the network, it has no way of knowing WHAT number is calling. The CLI is not a name. It's the phone number. Number withheld = no number reaching the called phone.

I might have my terminology slightly wrong. Do me a favour. Install Truecaller and then tell me how "private numbers" (number withheld) and people that is not in your contact list, are displayed on your phone? I know it works, just not sure how.

People not on your contact list = number retrieved from truecaller DB.

Number withheld - not gonna work.
