Greets All ,
Been reading about fibre for yonks -- fibre everywhere but not a drop for me.
Stay in a complex where nearly all units are rented out and tenants [Owners] not really interested in Fibre setup
Complex supervisor thinks Fibre is the Devils spiderweb ( no jokes )
So from that end EVERYTHING stalled !
However
I stay at the end of the complex and border on an empty area -- which still has a set of Telkom telephone poles that would suffice for running overhead fibre cable.
There are a number of different operator ( DFA / Vodacom/ Openserve etc ) fibre trunks in the closest busy ( main ) road with a number of spaced manholes. ( about 50 - 60 m from where I need the connection )

I have Telkom Home Uncapped ( DSL ) as well as accounts with Axxess and Webafrica
LTE is OK at about 30Mb but mobile data is expensive.

So this would be initially a one off connection just to my unit -- physically / technically I see no problem , HOWEVER would any of the ISP's be prepared to do something like this ?
I see this thread Openserve Fibre on Telephone Poles where it appears possible ?

WHO do I speak to to try and see if this is possible and try and get started ?
Openserve ?
The ISP's
Someone else ( prepared to get a network cabling company to string the fibre if I have to )
REALLY need fibre :crying:

Unfortunately the great but sadly late MickeyD is no longer here to assist

Suggestions .....

Unless you're happy with business fibre pricing and contracts, DFA and Vodacom are out of the question. Much the same with Openserve in a situation like this. As much as it seems easy enough to string a last mile fibre across a few poles and plug in to those main routes, a lot more goes in to the delivery of fibre than that.

The first part is the middle mile, which doesn't start from those main routes, but actually from the nearest node. A big reason that business fibre is so expensive is that the middle mile route is from a node to you as a user - dedicating a pair of fibres just for you, a single route spliced through each an every manhole along the way. The next part is backhaul, does the port that your fibre pair is plugging in to at the node have backhaul to a POP/DC? And what costs are involved in procuring that backhaul?

FTTH works on an economy of scale. Backhaul is switched at a Node and then a middle mile route is built to the neighbourhood/complex. From there short and cheap last mile drops are aggregated onto this middle mile, sharing the combined costs.

Your best bet would be to try educate your complex's tenants. Or find a good WISP. It's often tough to turn the tide in these situations. We've seen success with estates upgrading their CCTV/Security/DSTV infrastructure and seeing the light in a single big install.

Good luck though. If anyone else on the forum comes up with a plan here, give that man a bells!

Thanks for the explanation
I do know of TWO fibre installations close by that are "single installations"
One a [fancy[ high school the other a government department
One wonders if it is not possible to "piggy-back" on those ?
It is SO hard trying to get any actual technical detail out of any of these "installers"

Perhaps the only solution is to move ..?????

Try the school, you never know, there might already be a wisp running from there. And you're close enough to get a decent link.

Otherwise the latter is your only solution if you want fibre.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
