Getting the best of both 'worlds'....

I've been pondering on an idea and would like to share it to see if it would be viable and if anyone would be interested.

I currently have ADSL and dread the 3GB cap, but there is NO MyWireless available in my area and I also would like to keep my ADSL for the low latency and high local speeds.

What I've thought of doing is to start something like a bandwidth sharing community where we would purchase a 512k MyWireless package and share it among four people, including the costs naturally. Every time there are four people interested in joining the community we would either increase the bandwidth by 512k or purchase another connection linking to the same box.

Couple of questions I have is what are the upstream and downstream speeds on MyWireless? and does the contract state anything about doing this kind of thing.

If outgoing capacity is limited ADSL could be used to share bandwidth to members and if we grow this far enough we could start using more reliable sources such as Diginet as a base. Not sure about this yet though as I would have to do some costing first.

The connection could be set up on a Linux machine with proper bandwidth sharing and security and a static IP could be requested from Sentech so that the other users on ADSL can connect to the machine for international traffic. Each user would then have access to the full 512k's worth of bandwidth or 128k minimum if all four users are downloading simultaneously.

This solves the problem users such as myself have who are not able to get MyWireless and eliminates the need for others with ADSL to cancel theirs, and in doing so sacrificing their investment and good ping ADSL provides.

I would be willing to provide the Linux box, management thereof and contractual agreements between members so that there are no problems where payment is concerned.

If this 10Gb total cap rumour is true this whole idea is obviously taboo.

Please let me know your comments and thoughts on this... I might have overlooked some aspects and possibilities.

Hi Quik,
Good idea, but is that not what nocap and the other proxy providers are doing?
How about doing some costings on this.
You could have 8 users to a 512k contract and still get a guaranteed 64k.
Taking it a step further you could sell it as 16k or 32k chunks so that users could balance cost against speed.
I for one would be happy with 64k if the price was right.

Cheers

I think what quik is trying to do is start his own "mini" nocap. It could effectively be done with a Linux machine somewhere, connected to ADSL, and MyWireless. You could then VPN a group of buddies through to the Linux machine via ADSL, and share the Wireless amongst them using traffic shaping.

This is entirely feasible. It will just take a bit of setting-up.

The question is the rumoured 10Gb local "cap", which I will believe when I see it. Even so, until such time as it may or may not make it's appearance, it is definately worthwhile implementing this between a number of friends.

When sentech hits cape town on the 28th, we were assured by them that we'd be covered by about 2-3 towers. So signal won't be a problem. I'd definately be interested in setting this up, the only problem I think would be sentech, 'cause they're missing out on all the 24-month contract. But if we're able to get a static IP, this thing could work great.

Of course we wouldn't want the static IP on the myWireless, but rather on the adsl, since we'd effectively be wasting international traffic by routing them through the same 512k interface twice. Since there's no chance in hell we're getting that from telkom, I suggest we just you dynamic dns to keep the records up to date. I've been using this for more than a year now, with quite excellent results.

Please reply to this post if you're interested in joining in on something like this. If we get enough people (say around 4 to start with) this could definately work.

The only problem would be when the sh*t hits the fan, and telkom imposes some kind of second cap, whose going to be stuck with that awfull 24 month contract? Perhaps we could request a little money upfront to rather buy the modem loose, and then go for the 12 month contract.

From a technical point of view, a VPN using PPTP should work just fine.

You're quite right, this would be similar to what no-cap is doing, with the exception that we are doing it as a community and not as a for-gain innitiative.

I think no-caps idea is great and there are probably still alot of people who would rather opt fot it, but for those who want more control and are willing to venture something like this the benefits would be great, and costs even lower.

How consistant are speeds on MyWireless?

If someone could maybe give us an indication through estimated percentage...

Well the way I figure it is if you get 8 people connected through the 512k package and include ADSL in the costs it would be :

(~R1500 + ~R900)/8 = R300 per person per month

Obviously you would add on a little extra for the box and administration but certainly for minimum 64k chunk it beats any other product out there. Of course you will be relying on Sentech's availability which can be flaky at times. You could possibly add a high gain antenna to the cost to minimise this... just a thought [:)]

I'd take Sentechs availability issues over Telkoms NON existent service any day [;)]
