Hi all..

Wondering if anyone can assist me.

We have a 150l geyser - the water stays hot for about 10 minutes (one shower) before going completely cold. We are not using hot water before hand and the temperate has been put on max.

Is this normal for a 150l geyser? Should the hot water only stay hot for 10 minutes? Our body corporate seem to think this is standard and are not willing to fix it.

Hi and welcome to Mybb
Your question is very subjective , many factors can affect this , if the temperature of the geyser is relatively low(40C-49C) you will use more geyser water and less cold water and the warmish water left in the tank will get colder with cold water coming in , and if it's hot(50C-60C) you will use less geyser water and the water coming in will have less effect on the temp.
another aspect is the person who uses it, some people in my house can clear a 200l geyser in under 10 minutes

If the flow rate of the shower is inefficient at 9 litres per minute then even if the geyser is perfectly functional you have used more than half of it after 10 minutes and the 90 litres you’ve used in a replaced with ice cold water that will take at least another half hour to heat up again.

So start with measuring the flow rate of this shower. Just changing that to a water saving unit might already help.

Or simply taking quicker showers.

3-4 low-flow shower heads would use 200l in 10 minutes. That's 3-4 people showering at the same time for 10 minutes. Stop wasting water.
:cautious: What part of subjective do you not understand?
You realise you do not have to finish the full 200 l of water to make the tank cold (that's is what we talking about here) if a person only uses the hot water tap in a shower for 10 minutes he or she will use the same amount of water as a person who mixes the water in a shower for 10 minutes, but will make the geyser water cooler due to the geyser losing more hot water.

Since we being judgy , Tell me how many kilo litres water does your household use in a month?

Just thought I'd put this out there I 3 weeks ago had my geyser replaced under warranty because it shrunk.

I didn't ask questions just glad to have a new geyser, element and anode for mahala. It's a solar.

Could be perhaps.....

We also have a 150l unit fitted with thermostat set on 55 ,, we get 4 showers from 2 different bathrooms of average 10min each and the water is still warm after the last one finishes,,,water saving heads are fitted to the showers.

With your thermostat set to max - its not normal for it to be cold after 10min only if you were using it for one shower, fit water saving heads and test again.

Never heard of them shrinking
Under Warranty, so it's relatively new?

Hi there. Since you have such strong views regarding my water consumption what is it that you suggest I do in this situation?

Hi there, thank you for your response. The geyser is set to max. In your opinion do you think there is a problem with the geyser? It last for 10 minutes (mixed, one shower) before going completely cold. There is luke warm period whatsoever.

You clearly said clear a 200l tank. And I'm not judging. If someone uses 200l for a 10min shower, in my view, it's wasting water.

A 10 min shower in my house won't use 200l, even if 3 people shower at the same time.

Think you picked up my first post wrongly. People should conserve water. We are running out of it.

I've replied to another user. Anyways, get low-flow showerheads. You'll use less water which in turn will keep water warmer for longer.

Take a bucket and measure how much water comes out of your showerhead for a minute. Do the math. If it's around 20l a 10 min shower will empty your geyser and the water will be replaced with ice cold water.

Maybe the water pressure is low going into your geyser causing a vacuum which stops the hot water flowing thus only giving you cold water.
Open the hot water tap only and see if the flow stops after a while.

We talking about hot water here, so get with the program,
Since you so convinced I'm wasting water without knowing what or how much water we use, please tell me how much water in a month and on average per day do you use?

Yep something not correct if it's cold after 10 minutes, your sure it's actually hot in the first place, set at max you should use very little especially in summer

Geesus. You said it yourself. Some people in your house clear a 200l geyser in 10min. That would mean 20l a minute. If that's one person showering, it's wasting water. Simple really. If more people shower at the same time then say so. No need to be tongue-tied about it.
