A 15-year-old girl has given birth at a school in Bradford.

The baby was born in a medical room at St Joseph's Catholic College in Cunliffe Road on Friday, a school spokesman said.

An ambulance was called but the girl had given birth by the time it arrived. The Year 11 pupil is not thought to have known she was pregnant.

Spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Leeds, John Grady, said the girl and her baby were "fine".

"It is something that will be talked about for some time but we are just happy that the girl is OK, the baby is OK, and hopefully they will be home this weekend and spend Christmas at home," he said.

"It is not going to help to go moralising on the whole situation. That is not important, what is important is that the child and the baby are fine and everything is being done for them and their parents."

Mr Grady said the head teacher had met the girl's mother and preparations had been made for her to return to school and continue with her education.

ummm so many questions...

1. 15 years old..... not cool
2. Catholic church - just funny
3. Didn't know she was pregnant??? How????
4. Ambulance took to long?
5. A church not moralising about pre-maritual sex and having babies at schools...

Sometimes it is just better to close the internet down and ignore the world. Weird

Thats what happens if you take your biology practicles too seriously, and not reading the other side of the page regarding the expected result.

Name a church that doesn't moralise?

Ah yes that'd really work.

Not uncommon in todays times... especiall in the UK. Not cool, agreed.

3. Didn't know she was pregnant??? How????

thats what she said but I have my doubts.

4. Ambulance took to long?

Says who? Sometimes brith is fairly quick from onset of labour... ask me - my wife gave birth to a three kids within an hour of labour - didn't even know she was in labour.

Well - for starters, it's a bit late and I guess the local news paper is not the place to have the discussion. In fact I would venture to say that the newspapers have very little interest other than to be controversial. Just my 5c worth.

Its not funny at all.
Have you seen some of the stats regarding teens in the UK ?
A high percentage are drug and alcohol abusers by 13-15 and sexually active at 13.
Its damn scary if you ask me.

Not funny in terms of teen pregnancy, funny in terms of the irony involved

My bro said it's bizarre - you get home from work at lunch time for a snack and see 14 year olds pushing prams after school.

MY question is why werent the girls at my school like this.....but seriously I have also heard that in some sectors of UK society its perfectly accepteable for teenage girls to intenionally become preganant. IN the Uk you are obliged to go to school until you are 16, after that you can quit. If you are a female with a youngling, the state will give you an house and little bit of extra cash. I heard these chicks, become preganant so that when they turn 16 and drop out of school, they get an house

 Dude did I say anything about any other religion? It's funny in a sick way because she gave birth at a religious school. Since they specified the religion I copied it? Seriously relax...

Name a church that doesn't moralise?

Again my point exactly

My you are defensive about the Catholic Religion aren't you?

I did put a question mark at the end of the statement didn't I...

Oh and did your wife seriously give birth to triplets in less than an hour without knowing she was in labour? :D

An Ambulance in London has to arrive within 15 minutes if my memory is correct. I have never heard of anyone giving birth in 15 minutes. Obviously I could be mistaken which is why I put the question mark at the end.

Just for stats purposes

UK Teenage Pregnancy said:
* In 2000, 38,690 under 18 year olds in England became pregnant
* 44.8% of these ended in legal abortion
* 7,617 of these conceptions were to under 16s
* 54.5% of conceptions to under 16s ended in legal abortion

Hmm SA's stats are harder to track

SA Teenage Pregnancy said:
Of the 547000 girls across SA aged 13-19 and not at school, 72000 (13%) fell pregnant, Statistics SA found in its latest household survey.

It does however look like the UK has a bigger problem than us in this regard. Anyone know where I can get full SA stats regarding teenage pregnancy?

If the only reason these girls become pregnant is to drop out of school, what becomes of the baby?

I have not looked up the stats myself so this is only my opinion but if the above is true, these girls are evil. Destroy a life to get out of school? I am basing my opinion on the case that the girls see the baby as a means to an end, this is something that very rarely works out in favor of the baby as the girl intends to ignore the baby once the end has been achieved. Major psychological damage for the child. I know this is a leap but the psychology matches known patterns. If the baby is lucky, the girl bonds with it and then something good may come of it.

Peace.

Yes - it happens... think about it... how long does it take to give birth?
When do you start timing?
My eldest was born breech - normal birth. From realizing my wife was going to deliver to actual delivery was just over 20 minutes. I can imagine it could be alot less in some cases. For some reason there were no hints that it was about to happen.
