You can also use ES file explorer to copy files from your phone to your PC, which mostly negates the need for Samba

Huh? I would have thought dual direction copy was a given(if the permissions are set for it)
Having the ability to run a server on demand is so you or someone you allow to sit at a desktop PC and browse/access a phone.

Sure you don't have to but if you can why not.

Well I did give Samba a try, didn't really like it and with so many different ways to copy stuff off an android phone I never saw myself using it

decided to take the plunge.
Stuck with trying to unlock the bootloader though.

trying to do so through here: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/unlock/step1
Problem is that my phone has 15 characters in the IMEI but the site says it should have 14.

Any suggestions?

Nope its 15, and its the number you get when you dial *#06#

Did you check if its supported?
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and checked Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status if it says supported?

Edit: Nevermind..... It says clear as daylight under http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions

6. Enter your name, email address and the first 14 digits (remove the last digit) of your phone’s IMEI number. Click Submit. You can view the IMEI number by entering *#06# on your phone.

Root will not block you from updating to stock (You can always unroot as well)

Flash will, but as far as I understand you just rooting?

Yep, just reading the warnings on the site and this comes to mind.

"Some customers with unlocked boot loaders have experienced problems when they are accepting over the air upgrades (FOTA - Firmware upgrade Over The Air). For customers that have unlocked the boot loader, please do not accept any over the air upgrades. For additional information, check out the hints and tips from the community on the XDA forum."
