Glad to be rid of iBurst

I just read on itweb the furore over SMTP servers, and I must say I am so happy to have gotten rid of them. I am now running on HomeDSL 192, and speed wise I can hardly notice the difference from when I was on iBurst. I know iBurst should theoretically give better speeds, but then there is a huge difference between theory and practise.

I was one of the users that were cut off over the excessive usage rubbish, even though my usage was not extreme - all I had done was donwload Fedora Core 3 via BitTorrent. I vowed at the time to get rid of iBurst and am really happy to have done so now.

I also cannot comprehend anymore the price WBS charge for their UTD - R2800! I am currently running a Microcom WiFi/ADSL router which gives me an ADSL router, firewall, 4 ethernet ports and an 802.11g access point - it cost me a whopping R920.

So long, iBurst. I can't even say it was nice to know you!

join the club :) exact same here ...

ADSL = reliable, constantly fast connection, no restrictions on protocols whatsoever
iBurst = extreemly unreliable, most of the time slow, highly restricted crap, can be used only for HTTP.

I am soooo happy with DSL192 too!!! and I have 30GB per month to enjoy!

the iBurst modem cost R1300 equivalent in Australia! It is just in SA that it is so expensive! It is not by accident that they have locked modems to accounts, so you have no choice, except to buy modem from them! It is all about quick getting rich for some incompetent pigs driving Mercedes S600 probably, bought with your hard earned money.

I bought ADSL modem (so it has more or less the same functionality as the iBurst modem) and I paid R450! Nice!

with these iburst modems being locked...does anybody feel like opening one up and looking for a 4 or 5 pin header with labels such as tx, rx etc etc....

Ive been a staunch supporter of iBURST but now im gatvole of this crap service, it cant be any better on Telkom so that would mean a saving on month to month basis,
so what would the total cost of a home dsl 192 kit in total.
i mean every single cost including phoen rental line rental, whats the total?

/me hops around like a mad gnome on acid and chants, in unison with the ex-MyWireLess brigade "Told ya so, Told ya so, Told ya so, nyah nyah"

/me ducks and dodges several sharp objects and makes a run for the door ...

Dont remember you telling me this!!

Bandwidth reports
Your download speed : 847448 bps, or 827 kbps.
A 103.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 196180 bps, or 191 kbps.

Heard you are really happy with your p2p. Prehaps slim could give you saix guys a little help in getting around the shaping.

R636.05 all inclusive - already includes VAT with a certain 5GB ISP a/c from a SAIX reseller - I worked the costs out a few weeks back & that figure is now imprinted onto my brain. Obviously you should go month to month and not fall for the 24 month TelkoDemonopoly contract with "free" Macaroni modem, you get yourself a nice ADSL modem/router ~R450 upwards depending on what features you want...

/me takes over from bb_matt, does an equally silly hopping dance with chants of 'I can't remember if I told you so, but IBurst truly sucks, get ADSL - there's a lot more choice and fun than living with IBurst incompetence'
*makes a run for the door, but trips over the still warm remains of onetime unofficial IBurst spokesman slimothy, and hits the wall instead*

Yes, that what I mean WBS are stingy. The ports i normally use to SSH into my box are now closed, so now I need to use dial up and change the ports so it could work to SSH, and other stuff i used , there catche server, they wanted that in place since its cheaper for them on bandwidth, I'm bladdy sure b4 they put this catche server i could go to website, and actually see my real ip now forget about it they are spying on what I do so they can use that against me in court, If i do something wrong which to me is against Privacy to held such data in court, but always WBS want to save guard themself but yet again with there catche server they causing my problem for themself which save guard us..

that is the biggest pile of poo I have ever read in my life, including the mini books ian.. i mean lonegunman writes.

I would love to know what data center you use because if the port is 'closed' that means it is closed on the server side, if you are implying WBS have blocked SSH access, then you are sorley mistaken. I own 6 servers and help manage a few others, we use SSH as well as LKM services to manage and it all works suberbly, and if your SSH port was closed... then how would dial up help you connect to it?

And websites do see your real IP, they see a forwarded IP and the IP of the connection (the cache servers IP), they just ussually don't write scripts to handle the former and I don't see how a cache server would help them make any claims against you if you accessed illegal content that they couldn't make without it because they use logs in either case. RichardG I'm not sure if you realise this but just about EVERY ISP has a transparent cache proxy, because in computer science the fastest way to speed up anythign is with cache, it is ALWAYS the first route ISPs will look to. If you think it's just for them.... think again, if you have 10 000 people all requesting files from the gateway that chews up alot of bandwidth and causes slow down at a network level (ie. FOR EVERYONE) however if 5 000 of thier requests are cached and don't need to be proccessed from the gateway you speed up the network by 2 fold and leave more bandwidth for new requests.

if you have gripes against WBS just post them, but don't make stuff up to make the situation worse, like you did all the time on IRC
