Whatever your take on GMO foods;

Surely mandatory labelling should be enforced.
Surely proper long term studies should be enforced.
How can we subject our children to untested food produce altered at the genetic level, with as yet unknown consequences?

All this from the same people that brought us Agent Orange and claimed back then: "It is safe for humans."

And now we see the consequences thereof: birth defects (no hands and legs) and mental defects from the soldiers and local inhabitants who have since had children after being exposed to the chemical. It's complete lunacy.

GM Wheat May Permanently Alter Human Genome, Spark Early Death

Experts say that the GM wheat currently in development by an Australian governmental research agency could, if ingested, shut down certain genes, leading to premature death or risk thereof to multiple generations.

The GM wheat developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) using public funds is engineered to turn off genes permanently. The organization’s intent to turn off wheat genes, however, could affect human and animal genes.

“Through ingestion, these molecules can enter human beings and potentially silence our genes,” says Professor Jack Heinemann of the University of Canterbury’s Centre for Integrated Research in Biosafety. His report was published in Digital Journal.

DNA Matches in GM Wheat and Humans

The wheat genes intended to be silenced are known as SEI, the sequence of which are classified by CSIRO. What experts know about SEI is that parts of it match the human GBE gene sequence. GBE dictates glycogen storage, without which the liver scars and causes death in children. Adults with malfunctioning GBE genes can experience cognitive impairment, pyramidal quadriplegia, peripheral neuropathy, and neurogenic bladder.

“The findings are absolutely assured,” insists Heinemann. “There is no doubt that these matches exist.”

Survives Digestion, Cooking, Generations

Moreover, Heinemann describes the double stranded RNA (dsRNAs) present in GM wheat as “remarkably stable in the environment.” It is able to withstand digestion (even after cooking) and thereafter circulates through the body, where it amplifies into more and different dsRNAs and “alters gene expression in the animal.” These altered genes are passed to later generations, assuming the consumer doesn’t die of cancer or liver damage before procreating – seen in the recent GMO french study.

Dangers Well-Known by Agribusiness

No doubt, agribusiness will swoop to CSIRO’s rescue and claim that Heinemann’s findings are irrelevant. Monsanto, however, uses this same tactic in its genetically modified plants. The plants are engineered to produce dsRNA that survives digestion in the insect, shuts down genes, stunts growth, and kills it. This may be welcome news for some, given one biotech scientist’s email not only acknowledging the risks of disease and reproductive difficulties inherent in GMO consumption but also praising it as a ‘remedy’ for global over-population.

Agribusiness has gone to great lengths to silence skeptics of GMOs The Food and Drug Administration—which abounds in ties to agribusiness—deleted 1 million signatures for a GMO labeling campaign. Monsanto has been burning millions of dollars to campaign against GMO labeling. Depending on the poll, about 93% of Americans advocate GMO labeling.

Despite my attempts, I am unable to find the primary research article to support this. If you could link it, I would really appreciate it. I can comment though that this seems highly sensationalised. This seems like a hypothesis rather than evidence from the results of any particular study. The anti-GMO lobby is strong though so this can often be a murky playing field when trying to suss out the truth.

Could only come across this youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FI7n_caiTvE . The key words in this article are could and may , i think plenty more testing is still required.

This is another one of those things where several lifetimes of data and study are needed, but that will be far too late for us if it turns out to have an unintended consequence.

Can we really say unintended if we have no idea what the effects are? We cannot even use the word unexected because what expectation do we have?

Does it sound like a good idea to modify our food without testing it first? We are sorry, we didn't know. YOU DIDN'T KNOW BECAUSE YOU NEVER TESTED AND STUDIED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

After the past few years I've developed a wheat allergy which I'm sure is related to GM strains, I get serious cramps.

I believe you can find the ORIGINAL REPORTS here.

Here's the article:

Scientists: New GMO wheat may 'silence' vital human genes

"What we found is that the molecules created in this wheat, intended to silence wheat genes, can match human genes, and through ingestion, these molecules can enter human beings and potentially silence our genes," Heinemann stated. "The findings are absolutely assured. There is no doubt that these matches exist."

Flinders University Professor Judy Carman and Safe Food Foundation Director Scott Kinnear concurred with Heinemann's analysis.

"If this silences the same gene in us that it silences in the wheat -- well, children who are born with this enzyme not working tend to die by the age of about five," Carman said.

Digital Journal contacted Heniemann and Kinnear for more information on their research and future actions they may take regarding this issue.

"To date we have not heard from CSIRO, nor are we aware that CSIRO has released any safety studies into the GM wheat," Kinnear said in an email response. "We are in the final stages of drafting a formal letter to CSIRO which will be requesting further information and asking for them to undertake the studies that are recommended in our reports."

According to the researchers, extended testing should be performed before the wheat is put on store shelves. "We firmly believe that long term chronic toxicological feeding studies are required in addition to the detailed requests made by Heinemann for the DNA sequences used," Kinnear stated.

"The industry routinely does feeding studies anyway, so it should not be too much more difficult to do long term (lifetime) studies and include inhalation studies," Heinemann added. "These should be tuned to the way people would be exposed to the product."

The researchers also cautioned consumers against eating the wheat if it is approved prematurely. "I would advise citizens to request that these tests be done and the evidence meet with their standards of scientific rigour if in the end it is approved for use," said Heinemann.

If the concerns surrounding CSIRO's GM wheat are not resolved, the issue could end up in court, according to Kinnear: "If CSIRO was to consider moving towards human feeding trials without conducting these studies, we would be looking at what legal avenues are available to stop them."

Just go and eat your GMO's like a good boy and smile in your smugness while you feed them to your children.

Legit according to you though. Similar to people saying RT are not reliable.

One thing is for certain though, the french study cannot be ignored regardless of what website it comes from.

Your blind faith in a companies "safety standards" that produced (and lied about) Agent Orange are laughable.
Further, your faith in 90-day studies on products that are altered at the genetic level is laughable.

At a time when more and more countries - like France, Russia, Japan, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, India, with more following - are banning GMO's, ghoti still so willingly jumps on the dumb-train supporting GMO's.
What happened to caution, what happened to questioning.

Nope the ol' mindless jellyfish that is ghoti follows the crowd, as the unthinking herd animal he is.

Wrong!

According to ghoti, the Genetic Fallacy is a perfectly legitimate reason to reject just about everything....

Therefore, this analysis provides an estimation of the plausibility that the GM
wheat event could cause an adverse effect via the expression of these novel
dsRNA molecules.
The results neither imply that all possible targets of interest
have been identified, nor that all targets identified are certain to be silenced. For
these final hypotheses to be tested, the actual sequences would be required. It
would be incorrect to assume that if targets discussed below were not affected,
that the constructs were safe for use. Likewise, it would be incorrect to conclude
that sequence similarity between actual siRNAs and any targets below will
necessarily cause the targets to be silenced. Moreover, no bioinformatics‐based
analysis will be capable of making a definitive finding of safety. However, it can
provide evidence that assists in focusing experimental testing for potential
adverse effects and in that way contribute to the risk assessment and reduce
uncertainties built into regulatory decisions.

The report is rather conservative, overwhelming message is that prudent caution should exercised.

another case of someone needing a PhD.

Im sorry but genetically modified things cant alter your genes unless you eating the carrier virus and its a retrovirus. Nucleaic matter on its own without any enzymes cant do much.
