GMAIL DEPENDENCY

Hi there

I have three gmail accounts, I've never downloaded and stored a single e-mail. Log in, view message and log out, no e-mail client i.e. outlook. Should gmail ever stop, I'll lose alles

What you you guys do, enable your e-mail client to download mail while still keeping the originals in cyberspace?

Your advice is appreciated

I used to do that, but I have no bothered to do it in a long time. Storing mails offline is a pain.

If you are using your gmail for any kind of business though, then you need to have a backup plan.

I use Outlook to link to Gmail via POP3 (Imap is a pain) and store a copy of the mail on gmail while pulling everything down locally. Been doing that since '04.

I only use gmail for unimportant personal emails. Work emails are on another address. I use Thunderbird to access my Gmail messages.

By downloading the mail onto your PC you end up having to backup that mail to somewhere though.

I predict GMAIL isn't going anywhere for a very long long time but you never now. You chances of getting knocked by a bus is probably higher than the gmail server blowing up and all your information is lost.

True that, that was always my pet hate whenever I attended to a fresh install. But I should backup important e-mails, should just treat backing up mail like bookmarks and stuff. I've got three drives where I can store, besides my 40gig partition is only for the OS with docs, movies and series going to a dedicated storage drive. The gmail interface with all the ads makes for a huge annoyance.

until you need to archive, delete or change the structure in your pop mail client.
i use imap. it's not perfect, but at least it keeps synced between devices. it also allows push.
if you're reformatting or moving your os and using thunderbird, you can always just backup your profile and restore it with a minimum of fuss.

Hmmm imap, I'm from the 'pop' era. Think I must educate myself with it.

If you're using Firefox, use WebMail Ad Blocker to get rid of the GMail ads.
