Still extra hassle I don’t need and an ongoing cost no matter how long it lasts.

And like I said I can’t stand cooking on gas. And I love cooking.
Yeah dont worry induction hob works a treat on solar.

The speed and varied power it offers many dont understand unless you have used it.

Its ultra fast or ultra slow your choice

Yeah I think you should keep your current geyser and focus on having minimum 8kW inverter. You can always downgrade the element to just 2kW ac-only and that will be 100% fine, and much cheaper.

Fair on the ongoing cost.

Maintenance, not really so much. Used to get the bottles changed every six months odd. Guy who did my maintenance would come and replace them for me as well do a service at the same time if need be, much like the aircons. From my perspective zero maintenance.

Still time I need to take out and let someone in an arrange with them etc vs doing nothing.

It’s not zero.

Monitoring this thread. I want to factor costing of going solar using gas for stove and geyser for my own installation later this year.

Was just curious as to why nobody considered such before I go down that rabbit hole. Guess it comes down to preference only.

Im pretty much off grid

With only two days I needed to switch eskom on.

You can easily run an oven (with 8kw inverter) and induction hob (with 5kw inverter).

I would pick induction hob any day over gas. Each plate uses 2kw at MAX power and has 15 power setting meaning it can be as low as 200w.

Here is a combination of oven and induction stove use with no issues (off grid)

using one of these hobs

Once again - if you going full solar induction is a great option if you not going solar gas is a great option.

Yeah that’s the thing the induction at Max is pretty much never used.

Mine is at 40% most of the time and at worst 60% when I need “high”.

Hardly ever goes over 1kW and uses maximum 12kW a month.

Worst ever was 14kW, due to my wife making candles.

Would be interesting to know what the monthly comparison is for gas cost wise, but then I guess nobody has gas hooked up to their stove top only to really compare.

I ran my normal element based geyser from solar for about a year (it was a 3.5 kWh element), nothing wrong with your thought process.

I used to heat the water to 65 degrees, starting from 12 noon, using the element and then switched it off at about 4pm. Only issue with this is there is no hot water early morning.

Eventually opted for a heat pump, as opposed to solar geyser, as this (my opinion, there are different thoughts on this) seemed a better option.

With the heat pump we now have hot water (60 degrees) from 10am the morning. Before 10am the water is still at around 40 degrees from the previous day (in summar). All power is supplied by solar and everything is automated using the heat pump control unit.
Thought the heat pump can run 24 hours.

Power usage is minimal. So can use battery power.

My gas lasts me about 4 months, and still cook most nights off a 9kg bottle.

Yeah I’m all about that induction life.

Currently still using a freestanding option because Defy made a stupidly shaped stove top where I can’t drop in anything from anyone else to replace it, so needs a full kitchen renovation down the line.

I have no idea how that works out in cost.

What do you reckon it comes down to per month on average?
Maybe R2 per day, if I use it.But that’s a very rudimentary calculation.

I’ll never go induction/electric stove again.

Got a 19kg delivered in June last year, only used for cooking and still going strong... could possibly get 9 month use from it - cost was r500

I got a 9kg in March, replaced it the week before XMas.

Actually took out the induction stove as I was not about to spend 20 grand on compatible cookware.

Sometimes something I forget about but thankfully we bought induction compatible to start with and old school cast iron works like a dream on induction

Stand to be corrected think it was 250-280k between different options in the tiers I wanted yeah.

For reference just for the capital equipment, still need to factor in wiring/installation. Theoretically peak 16kw pv power.

Yep, so 350 for almost 8 months of use is far more economical.
