Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold has apologised to their fans after a humiliating 52-10 defeat to the Crusaders in Durban at the weekend.

The Sharks were booed off the field by the Kings Park faithful after a lacklustre performance which also saw them receive a third red card in as many matches.

Flank Jean Deysel was sent off shortly before half-time when he kneed Crusaders' loose forward Matt Todd in the back of the head. At that stage, the Crusaders were down to 12 men, having received three yellow cards.

Deysel was cited for the incident and is likely to be suspended.

The Sharks already have captain Bismarck du Plessis suspended for kicking an opponent in the face, while centre Frans Steyn was banned for five weeks for a tip tackle.

The Sharks are currently in second spot in the South African Conference and seventh in the Overall log.

Gold took to Twitter to apologise to fans, insisting they will work hard to resurrect their season.

The tweet read: "No excuses! Just an apology to Sharksfans. This is a great bunch of guys who are hurting. We will man up and do all we can to fix it!!"

Gold should rather resign. Not sure what qualified him to be the coach of arguably the best SA team on paper but this squad has gone to hell in a hand basket since JW left.

They got destroyed whilst playing against 12 men at one stage, think they conceded two tries during that period if i recall correctly. If your team has the ill-discipline the Sharks have displayed it boils down to pis poor management

To be honest, I do agree with this.

Looking at his history, he has never coached a team that has done anything really amazing..

I wonder who told the Sharks that playing a kicking against the Crusaders is a good idea? And I thought the play off against the Crusaders last year was bad. :(

Really? :wtf:
Assistant coach of the national side not a good enough qualification?
In my opinion JW came and disrupted the Sharks for the year he was here and left them in shambles.
Our best coach was Plumtree. He had the best mindset for the Sharks and under him they played the most attractive rugby

As far as I'm concerned being an assistant coach for the national side under PdV doesn't mean squat.
The rest of Gold's CV is also quite unflattering.

Surely the Sharks can afford someone with much better credentials and a solid track record?!
...then again he's probably dik mates with John Smit which is why he got the job in the first place.

Yup, that last year of Plumtree's in the Super 15 was fantastic, even though we lost the final we got there playing seriously good rugby. Since JW we have been going backward.

I still don't understand how Smit got the job, he's not a corporate man and I don't think he knows the right way forward.
