The US Coastguard has made contact with four missing crew members of a cargo ship that capsized off the coast of the state of Georgia on Sunday.

Car carrier the Golden Ray overturned early on Sunday morning after leaving the port of Brunswick.

Authorities managed to rescue 20 of the crew, but were reportedly forced back by fire, smoke and unstable cargo.

Those remaining on board are all South Korean nationals, the country's foreign ministry said.

Rescuers have now made contact with those crew members still aboard the Golden Ray and are planning an extraction, the US Coastguard has tweeted.

According to MarineTraffic.com, the Golden Ray was en route to Baltimore. The ship was built in 2017 and was reportedly carrying more than 4,000 vehicles when it tipped over.

A South Korean cargo vessel carrying about 4,000 cars bound for the Middle East was listing heavily on Sunday off the coast of the southern US state of Georgia, an official of operator Hyundai Glovis said.

The US Coast Guard said a pilot and 23 crew were aboard the Golden Ray when it overturned in St. Simons Sound and 20 people had been rescued.

Rescue teams were searching for four crew members believed to be inside the engine room of the vessel, the company and South Korea's foreign ministry said.

The rescued included six South Koreans, 13 Philippines nationals and the American pilot, the foreign ministry said.

The cars on the ship represented marques such as Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, the company official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, said on Monday.

"We are making rescue of crew members as our top priority. After that we will investigate any damage on cargo," the official said.

The Vessel Finder website said the ship had recently called at the Port of Brunswick and was headed to Baltimore. The carrier was built in 2017 and was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, according to the website.

The Golden Ray has a capacity to carry 6,933 vehicles according to the Glovis website.

The crew are being rescued, but salvage is going to be hard, even if it remains floating!? See: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49638943
The US Coastguard has rescued two of four crew members of a cargo ship that capsized off the coast of the state of Georgia on Sunday.

Lt Lloyd Heflin told the Associated Press news agency team are currently in the process of removing a third man.

Rescue teams drilled a hole near the stern of the ship to get to the trapped crewmen.

P.S. Lucky they missed last week's Hurricane Dorian...

Golden Ray, the Capsized Ship, Currently on Fire off Georgia Coast - Car and Driver

1621077462154.png

The Golden Ray, the ill-fated cargo ship that capsized in September 2019 with 4,200 vehicles on board, caught fire on Friday afternoon, May 14.

The ship's remains are in the water of Saint Simons Sound, off the coast of Georgia, and it has been the subject of a complex salvage effort for more than 18 months.

Only about 1,000 of the thousands of ruined cars, trucks, and SUVs on board have been removed from the wreck to date.

This is the first time that a major fire has broken out since the salvage operation began, and it dwarfs the fires that broke out during the ship’s capsizing.

The exact source of the fire is unknown, though Section 3 does comprise the ship’s engine room. What's more, unified command officials reckoned during an April 26 briefing that there could be as much as 44,000 gallons of fuel while gaming out worst-case scenarios; more than 320,000 gallons had been siphoned out before cutting operations began.

Golden Ray's remnants catch fire, no one hurt - The Brunswick News

Fire broke out inside what remains of the shipwrecked Golden Ray in the St. Simons Sound early Friday afternoon, possibly sparked by handheld welding torches used in precise cutting operations, said U.S. Coast Guardsman Michael Himes, spokesman for Unified Command.

Within a couple of hours, five tugboats with firefighting capabilities had surrounded the half-submerged shipwreck, drowning the flames with thousands of gallons of saltwater siphoned from the sound, Himes said.

Though smoke continued billowing from the gaping western end of the 300-foot-long chunk of steel, salvors and Coast Guardsmen had the fire under control by 5 p.m., Himes said.

There were no injuries, Himes said. All but the salvage master and a skeleton crew of firefighters have been evacuated from the VB 10,000, the 255-foot-tall crane vessel that does the tough cutting and heavy lifting in what has been described as the largest marine salvage operation in U.S. history.

Thick dark clouds of smoke poured into the sky above the shipwreck when the fire started some time after 1 p.m. Hot orange flames could be seen flashing from openings in the shipwreck.

Welders suspended from rappelling lines had been conducting specific cuts just inside the cutting path of Section 3 when the fire started. Section 3 is at the eastern end of the shipwreck and is the focus of salvors’ current cutting operation.
