Volkswagen is unveiling the second new R model in its current lineup at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Golf R shares its basic underpinnings with the recently-unveiled Scirocco R. It also adds VW's 4Motion AWD to its architecture.

Replacing the heavy naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 found in the Golf V R32 is a 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine. Power is 195kW (265hp) and torque is around the 350Nm mark. The 0 - 100km/h time should be covered in about 6.5 seconds for the 6-speed manual and 6.4 seconds for the DSG model. These figures compare very well with the Audi S3 and the TT S with which the Golf R shares its engine.

Yes, the V6 was "heavy", but it sounded amazing. Now it'll just be a droning 4 cylinder. No thanks.

Got to agree with Gaz{M}... no more big6 happy noises. :( The rest looks very nice, though.

Hopefully they didn't make the same mistake as Opel and put that much power on a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout.

I don't think it's the new king of hot hatches, surely?

It makes another 7kw more than the S3, but I'm pretty sure the S3 is still marginally quicker

well the S3 is not the old king of hot hatches and doubt it will be faster then that... probably very close though.

so won't be :) there hot hatches closer to the 6 sec 0-100's :/

I can think of at least one hot hatch that's under 6 secs.

The RS3 will be the new king of hot hatches...
The GTi's regardless of speed is still the king.

Strange that the R20T is 0.5s slower to 100km/h than an S3 when it has more kw and torque. It can't be much heavier surely and it has an upgrade of the S3's 188KW engine. Hmmm.

VW are hardly honest with their claims... they always sell themselves short...
Eg: There are no PGTis that are 110kw, they all more than 115kw...

The BWA GTis are over 160kw...

I also found out recently that the Scirroco 2.0T, Jetta 2.0TSI and the MK6 Gti have the exact same engine... just that the Jetta and Roc has a 147KW map...

or Quattro is just stronger than 4 - motion:p

Power & Torque isn't everything, a heavy car will usually have a quicker 0-100 time for similar torque/power, within limits!

Reason? Wheel spin & traction, if you've ever driven a small car with too much power you'll know what I mean, when I drove a Corsa B with a 2.0L turbo engine it had wheel spin even when the car was going 160km/h, the car is just too light for that sort of power (250+kW).
