Still running Ubuntu Ultimate edition 2.8 build on 10.10 don't see the need to upgrade every six months just wait for a long term support release then upgrade and as for winning over windows users, just show any windows user how cool the Compiz desktop cube is and I'm sure you'll have a couple of takers.

I see what you guys are getting at with removing Unity. I watched a vid on youtube where the guy installed G3 on Ubuntu and used it instead of Unity, hence my post.

One thing that I have noticed, as per someone's earlier post, is the crap that is happening in Mint 11, I don't know if it is due to changes in Ubuntu, but there does seem to be issues with DE, even though they are still using G2.x. I've reverted back to Mint 10 as it just works a lot better without the glitches. It seems that Ubuntu really isn't that good a distro to build your own over.

I've got a few other distros ready for the VM, to see which I feel more at home with. Waiting for the Mint release that uses Debian as a base to mature.

Slick, it is not that easy to install Gnome Shell ontop of Unity in Ubuntu--so many intricacies that it will remove Unity and other dependencies that the DE becomes unusable. Hence people have started their own side-kick type distro using Ubuntu code-base (e.g. RIOME, PINGUYOS, etc).

But I agree, it should be as easy as just installing anothee DE ontop of Unity/Ubuntu--wishful thinking.

Quite easy with 11.10 (few sudo's and done).
Tried it, back to unity desktop though, did not like it all that much.

Best for me was still 10.04 with compiz.

..Ubuntu, but I just don't like your new personality, Unity. You have become like, like a....um....a woman. Temperamental, to say the least.

I have a found a new friend, his name is Fedora 15 . He is so much cooler. He can be a bit effy sometimes, but nothing like giving him a dose of google can't fix. In fact I just found the best medicine for him. It's called easyLife. It cures everything, flash 32 & 64 bit, skype, etc.

Coming out? :p

Anyone seen the new Mint

On RC now and I must say, it might become the new Ubuntu. It did a hell of a better job with Gnome 3 than Unity did. Sure you still lose some customization but at least Alt+Tab and Taskbars works. Some might say it looks like Windows 7 (Start Menu) but it actually works for me.
