A friend is studying photography and uses the necessary software that comes with the trade.

What laptop would be nice for Photography and what would I look for, dedicated graphics card etc.

Was looking at the ACER Aspire 5742 with 512mb ATi dedicated graphics card and HD crystal screen but was hoping for something cheaper?

I would go for the Apple core i7 MacBook Pro 15 inch. Excellent, in all respects. If it is too expensive, I would go for one of the cheaper (and smaller) 13 inch MacBook Pro's

I use the 13" day in and day out and it definitely gets the job done. :) One huge advantage of running a Mac is Aperture.

I use that Apple core i7 MacBook Pro 15 " with the higher resolution matte display, which is available from Apple USA, that I mentioned. It is awesome with pictures (and brilliant for everything else too)

Mac or nothing if you're looking at a laptop (cheap doesn't come into this equation).

If you're serious about photography, you'll want a desktop with a 1900x1200 26" (min) IPS LCD monitor.

I guess I'll have to tether myself to a desk if I ever get serious about my photography. ;)

And my e-penis is bigger than yours!!!!

But on a more serious note, you can have all the toys but it does not help if you can't take a half decent Pic.

Buy what your budget allows you to have and also according to what software you'll be useing.

Acer is reputable brand. Also make sure that it is not a crystal brite screen.
