Good news for driver licence renewals in South Africa

The Department of Transport has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), which will reduce the number of time motorists will have to spend waiting in queues, says Transport minister Fikile Mbalula.

So announcing stuff that will make sweet fa real difference and stuff that isn't actually available and probably won't be for at least 12 months.

This will make absolutely no difference. You will still need to visit a center. You will still need to complete the application forms. You will still sit in a queue. When you get to the front you will still need to do your fingerprint & photograph. Someone will still need to check to see if the document is uploaded, else another eye test or another visit on another day. Then you will still need to queue again in the payments row and pay for everything.

I renewed my license last year. Got a certificate from a private optometrist the day before. No one at the testing center is interested in this until you have waited your turn and then get helped. The same person who helps you does the eye test, fingerprint and photograph. So, I doubt there will be shorter queues.
