Good news for South African IT job seekers

CareerJunction’s latest research revealed that software developers, middle managers, and sales consultants remain the most sought-after professionals in South Africa.

Demand for software development skills increased by 22% from January to February 2021, meaning they remain in significant demand in the South African job market.

“An overview of vacancy levels across various sectors provides a good indication of where the majority of employment takes place,” CareerJunction said.

And it's going to continue increasing until bbbbbb/eeeee ad nauseum is removed.
But then you'd probably have to also entice the non bbbb/eeeee boys back from uk/aus/nz/can/usa.. And that will take some doing..

That's because it's a shite field to be in because you are replaceable and turnover is high.

Its a great field to be in because there is so many oppertunities for you. I think SA IT pros/devs leave SA in big numbers. A good dev can easily get out of SA, and many leave, adding to the IT skills shortage. Many local devs are also snatched up by overseas companies and the devs stay in SA, but work remotely for foreign business. Out of the 20 years I have work in SA as a dev, 10 of those years was for foreign companies. SA has become like India in terms of cheap IT labor, maybe with a bit better reputation.

There's rarely a time in South Africa when programmers aren't in demand. You'd have to work at staying unemployed.

A shortage of middle managers must have doubled productivity.

In the case of programmers it has nothing to do with BBE or affirmative action. Any programmer who claims they had to go to another country because of either is full of it.

It is true that dev skills are so in demand in SA, that even whites can get a dev job, but you can`t say that BEE has no impact on why they are leaving. BEE has a negative impact that is always part of the equasion.

...virtually the same information as the previous article a few weeks ago...

Management think they're easily replaceable. It can easily cost a million Rand to replace a single senior programmer. But the attitude towards employees which you're describing is hardly unique to programming or anything else referred to as IT. Besides money or a bad attitude from management high turnover can also be due to people getting bored. Being a field that involves people who are creative as well as technical that is inevitable. Sometimes this turnover is also due to company culture - keeping people in their current niche even though options exist within the company - other times they simply lack options internally.

one of my clients was telling me they battling to get the people in from India so the market is good for locals again ... or something like that

That is true. Indians are struggling to get Visas, hence companies like Wipro and Zensar are employing locals, BUT, not at the same ZAR rates as the imported Indian devs.

It has no impact at all on their ability to get employment or to get paid well, so it is not any part of the equation for them in regard to employment. It might have an impact on services, wasting of tax money and so on. Usually then the reason given would be about those problems.

On the other hand there are jobs where being the wrong colour or sex is a genuine impediment.

Don't forget Germany and the Netherlands.

Huge uptake in those 2 EU countries at the moment.

Talent.io and Honeypot.io are two great sites for anyone looking to move to the EU. I managed to get into the EU through those sites. Although I am heading back to RSA later this year. Things are just too costly in the EU so it's not always greener on the other side.

But it is always a good idea to have a plan in place in case the ANC decides to go full ZANU
