Good news for South Africans who are waiting for fibre

The rollout of fibre in South Africa could soon be faster and more effective, according to major fibre network operators.

This is if the regulations contained in the Proposed Policy and Policy Direction on the Rapid Deployment of Electronic Communications Networks and Facilities come into effect.

I fail to see how it would make operators want to roll out in an area. So far it's all been about what their perceived ROI would be, something this won't change. Also we have a Sasol pipeline running along one of the streets. Every time someone works there there also has to be a Sasol van. I'd hate for that to be rushed.

We recently had Vodacom trenching through our suburb, then we found out they were only providing back haul to their tower. Think we'll be stuck with DSL for a while longer.

could soon... if...
and then the problems are listed
why should we get exited?
the anc promised flush toilets and running water 30 years ago - and since then everything went down the longdrop...

do you still stay in a picturesque village outside PE? bit of a stretch for ftth....

I suppose that's one way of describing the 'burb where we live.

There is fibre going through the area, even before Vodacom trenched the 12km to the highway, but yeah, I'm not too hopeful.

The problem here, again, is government's lack of planning and coordination. Instead of going "okay, so these fibre guys want to install these fibre things in these neighborhoods, so lets do the digging of these trenches and stuff ourselves, make them pay us for renting the space and do it once, and properly, with enough space for any other fibre provider to pull their own cables through", they go "okay, YOU GET A CHANCE" (dig dig dig, mess mess mess, water pipes/electricity off, dig dig dig, mess mess mess, complete) and "YOU GET A CHANCE" (dig dig dig again, mess again, breaks other guys' cables).....

anyway, I need more beer
